I have an opportunity to pick up a Big R Dynasonic that is missing the snare rail. The drum is otherwise complete. I'm not much of a Rogers guy, so I have no idea what a fair price would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I assume that getting a replacement rail will not be cheap?
Question - Rogers Dynasonic Last viewed: 1 day ago
After checking eBay for recent sales, I found a Big R snare without the snare assembly for just over $200 shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970s-Rogers-Big-R-Dynasonic-5-x-14-Snare-Drum-Worldwide-Shipping-/380400274403?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58919f8be3
If you found just the rail complete, from what I've seen expect to pay 80-100 for the rail. If the snares are with it put it at 125 plus. You can buy aftermarket snares from Puresound for 35-40 bucks plus.
Not to steal your thread, but if you want a Dyna, complete and in VGC, may I steer you to the one I'm selling. It's a Oval badge, same COB shell and except for heads, 100% original.

What size is the shell?...the 6.5" usually go for 30-40% more than the 5", depending on shape. I bought a 5" Big R last year without snare assembly for $135. The snare rail is available on eBay for $80 (having a brain fa#t & can't remember the guys name) from a guy that bought the old Rogers Molds, but you'll still have to buy wires. I think they're under $40 from PureSound, but they're damn good wires. If you just want a player, there is another alternative to buying the Rogers frame which is made by these folks:
And you can always play it with a regular snare strand until you find the stuff you need cheap.
Bottom line, don't break the bank on a Big R...but if you can get into it cheap, go for it!

Replacement snare frames from Dave Drew at Al Drew's Music in Woonsocket, RI. They ARE indeed OEM made from the original Rogers dies/molds. Thought I would help with your F A R T fungus amugus! Hope you didn't mind! :-)

OK, as long as we're going to peddle our wares, I also have a Dyna up for grabs! LOL! Great drum, all original. One wire missing from original wire set, also one rubber bump guard missing from the frame (shown in photo #9 of these pics).
Oval badge, script logo from 1968...serial #11,361 and in amazing shape for $399.

There's also a Slingy GK Sound King in these pics that's also for sale.

So, here's the scoop. It's a 5" and the guy wants $150 and he's pretty firm on it. I'm thinking I'll hold off unless he cools down on the price a bit. I'd rather spend a bit more for an older complete example.

That's a good price for a Dyna, assuming that all it needs is the correct snare frame and wires. Al Drew's is the ONLY source for the correct frame for that era drum and the price is reasonable for those. Also, I'd go for the Puresound wires, they are more affordable and are readily accepted in the vintage drum community if you don't want to spend the $$ on NOS Rogers wires.
I had a 5x14 big R dyna, sold it a couple of years ago for 275.00,I would not pay any more than that that for Big R dyna unless it was mint.
I don't know current prices,but you might find a complete big R 225.00 - 275.00 IMO.
Last I saw Swivo/ script 5x14's were usually going for 300.00 plus
