Never on any vintage (70's and earlier) snare I've ever seen. Are you sure its not a key holder (that leaves a bigger hole than a vent hole and isn't across from the vent so maybe not?). I don't know about 80's and later drums.

(If its the 70's drum you show here: http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=21122, then that IS a key holder. You can still buy keys that will fit in the holder. There is a piece of spring metal that holds the key in - if the spring metal is missing the key won't hold).

Underneath the snare strainer wouldn't be a reasonable place to put vent holes. This has got to be an owner modification; probably to add a different strainer. The slapshot strainers (like the one in your picture I mentioned above) used fairly large strainer holes.

My jasper round badge reissue snare from the early 2000's has 3 grommets I think (I'm at work). When I received the drum I did a search since I never saw that before and found this thread:

Sounds like your drum is legit.

Speaking of the spring, anyone know where replacement spring clips can be had? Thanks!

Sorry to hijack.

Mikey or Blair would be a good start. Good luck.
