leedybdp, vintagemore2000! Just had a nice long conversation with Jim! As always, Jim uses very colorful language! You wouldn't believe the number of 4 letter words coming out of his mouth when I told him of the Slingerland kit! LoLoLoLoJim doesn't specifically remember this kit, but echoes leedybdp's thoughts about what he would have said the kit was worth. That, plus Jim says that he has plenty of experience estimating the value of kits without having to bring in someone else to do that. Jim's bottom line is that this seller will be taking allot of flack from people about this kit. Since I'm local to the seller, I just may give him a call and get some more info. I'll update everyone as necessary!

Thanks for the update. I think that I'll contact Jim tomorrow. We haven't swapped stories for a few months. On our last get together, we had a great lunch at the last kosher style deli in Dallas. The current owner is a very nice Vietnamese lady, she has maintained the original essence of the long time restaurant. You will not find Egg Foo Henny Youngman on the menu. Take my snare...please!

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Brrrrrrrup-BOOM, CRASH! Funny Post

The thought of an old Kosher Deli, in Dallas yet, being owned and operated by a little Vietnamese lady, tickles the hell out of the comedy center in my brain.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The best Chinese restaurant in Gary, Indiana used to be Ming Ling which was owned and operated by Jack Cohen. I grew up in the neighboring city of Hammond, Indiana where we had one authentic Chinese restaurant when I was a young boy in the 1950's. That restaurant was named Cam Lan. Remember the movie a Christmas Story? If you remember the Christmas Chinese dinner that Ralphie's family ate in a restaurant because the hillbilly neighbor's hound dogs ate their turkey, the restaurant in the movie was exactly like Charlie's Cam Lan. The writer and narrator of that story grew up in Hammond, Indiana about ten years ahead of me, and three miles east of our house.

I know very little about Slingerland drums other than what I've read on the Vintage Forums for the last few years and seeing the odd set on tv and in the shops.

Here's my analysis.....from a Gretsch and Vintage point of view:

Say you went out to buy a brand new Gretsch kit (I know we're talking about Slingerland drums here - but please bear with me - they'er also Vintage drums) in these sizes. The MSRP is around $5900. I can get the shellpack for 68% of that - in Canada - at $4k plus the tax.

The cymbals and hardware that are for sale here would probably cost you $900-$1100 or more - including the cases. That's used. Barring of course the exceptionally good deals we sometimes find. Now we're well over $5K.

The other issue here is the 'Vintage" value. It looks like the drums'n gear are in very good shape - confirmed by Mr. Petty so says the seller.

It's hard to put a price on vintage value. But I say....from what I've seen...some of us put a heafty price on it.

Bottom line....these drums will be sold for what someone's willing to pay to have them. Sometimes we get good deals and sometimes we have to pay the price in order to own that 'Holy Grail' kit we're looking for.

I for one like to see vintage drums selling for some good prices....compared to some other instruments out there.....I always say...and I echo some others here..."Drums are just catching up in the Vintage price world."

It sould not scare us to see high prices because there are always going to be good deals.

That's my take on this...Just an observation and educated guess (bought some vintage stuff over the last few years).

You're right it is not a fare comparison - new Gretsch & the Slingerland drum. I did say I don't know much about them. And I hear you on all your points below. And yes...to most of us he is asking too much for the kit.

The comparison was only made because I know how much Gretsch drums cost. I have a 2011 Custom shellpack that was a dream-come-true for me to finally buy last year and the other dream-come-true for me was two years ago when I picked up my late 50's Gold Sparkle Gretsch kit. But I have to say....that if it came down to which one to let go someday - if that day comes.....I would let the new shellpack go before the ole Gold Sparkle kit. The history....the shells.....that whole vibe just cannot be beat-with-a-stick regarding old drums. I have some very cheaply built Gretsch drums too and I've sold off new (not Gretsch though) drums and kept the old ones because I like the old ones more.

I think if there is that if there is someone out there that wants the kit in question, for whatever reason, may pay $3K or more, but ya $9K may be excessive. But - you never know, some people have a lot of money and will buy what they want when they want.

I will end by saying markets go up and down, Empires come into being and fade into history.......we all die some day. A blip in the market = means nothing in the big picture. Buy your drums - be happyx-mas2

Kona, I respect what you're saying here, but I don't think a comparison between what a new top of the line Gretsch kit costs and what a vintage Slingerland kit costs is a meaningful comparison. They're really two different things. Someone paying that much for a Gretsch is likely a professional musician looking for a serious gigging/recording kit. Most people buying vintage Slingerlands probably aren't planning on using them as their main tour instrument. As well, the Krupa model set for sale on ebay isn't the Holy Grail of collectible Slingerlands as far as I'm concerned. That title would most likely go to a Rolling Bomber or an early Radio King. Slingerland made a lot of these Krupa model sets in the 60s, and a lot of them are still around. As I said in a previous post, they just aren't that rare. And most of those sets could be restored and brought back to great condition. In addition, as far as the general value of collectibles goes, top dollar goes to things that are complete and all original, and the kit for sale on ebay is neither. The heads have been changed, so they aren't the original Sound King heads, and the snare stand is missing. (I do have to correct my earlier question about the bass pedal having been painted, though. They were apparently painted on one portion as far as I can tell from the catalog). And if the set has been rewrapped as a couple of us suspect, that further detracts from its value as a collectible piece. The bottom line is that this ebay seller just wants WAY too much money for these drums. And I myself don't think that driving the vintage drum market prices sky-high is a good thing. Of course, it's good when prices go up to reflect value, but at a certain point, the prices for vintage things gets so high that it essentially destroys the market. Then the market collapses, and a lot of people are left holding a lot of stuff that isn't worth half of what they paid for it. That's exactly what is currently starting to happen in the vintage guitar market.Personally, I think that anyone who would pay $9500 for a '66 Krupa set is a fool, but beyond that, driving the prices up that high just really isn't good for the vintage drum market in general. It sets the precedent of putting vintage kits out of range for most of the people who would really cherish and even play them. And that seems like a real shame to me. I mean, at a certain point, collecting anything has to be about more than just the money. But that's just my perspective.

Ok, here's my :2Cents:

The guy has no clue to values on the current market and is a dreamer. If he gets $9500 for a common finish/spec Slingerland kit, no matter how clean or "original", then I should be able to get $25000 for my Ludwig Hollywood kit finished in Black Panther......this of course going by this guys whacked out logic on current drum values.....LoLoLoLo

Some people really have NO clue.....DOH

My personal "****" on this guy. I too emailed him and told him I had a "museum" quality 1956/57 Radio King set, that even in a "good" economy , wouldn't command more that maybe $5K. Mine are Chicago Badge, Radio King 3Pt. Snare and non retractable bass drum legs with N.O.B. T-Rods and lugs.

Apparently, everyone else here on the VDF has reamed him too. Oh well, I like dreamin' and I used to love smokin' the hooch back in the day!!!Cooked Egg
