This showed up on Craigslist and is a little tempting. I know I would have to buy new bottom lugs and hoops. With that in mind, is it a good deal from what you can tell?

Wow...those are NICE. With shiny hoops and lugs and white bottom heads, those would look great. Go for it!!
if you decide not to buy them, let me know because I would be interested in that set.
You guys are right. This is a no brainer. I will contact him again to be sure it is still available. I have seen what the prices are on these on Ebay but I don't see them actually sell for those prices.
What do you chaps think about the sound of Slingerlands from this time? Only good for jazz or pretty versatile? What do you like or don't like.

As drums go, they are the best. Fat, warm, round tone. The sound of a great drum never goes out of style.
Oh, and regardless of what magazines and manufacturers would have you believe, a great deal of modern recordings are actually recorded useing old Ludwig and Slingerland drums in the studio. For example, Joey Kramer may endorse DW and play them on tour, but he records with old Ludwigs from the 60's and 70's. Modern maple drums are really expensive and have cool finishes but in my opinion, and the opinion of many engineers, they don't really sound that great.
The Slingies sound great for any style. But, does the drummer?
I did it boys! I picked them up today. They are in rough shape for sure but the guy threw in a vintage Ludwig snare (it had a tubesock in it to mute it, lol) the snares were torn and is rough as well but it has a very old badge. It alone may be worth my money which is good because the Slingies were stored in dampness. The guy also threw in a vintage Ludwig red sparkle floor tom with a very old badge. It is in pretty good shape. I will try to get some photos up soon.
This will be such a fun project!!!!!!!!!
