Possible optical illusion - how big is this cymbal

Loading...

I bought this vintage Werco set at auction today (goodwill). First, I'd like to thank Mikey777 for the heads up on the non-us forum. I check goodwill periodically, but had not seen this one. thanks! The description said that the biggest drum is 20.5 by 17, so I'm assuming that the bass is 14x20. That said, how big is the ride cymbal at the bottom of the pile? Also it doesn't have the typical greenish patina like the other cymbals. What's up with that? I'll drive approximately 2 hours to pick it up next week. In the meantime, how big is that beast, and is it likely to be a decent cymbal or trash? Sorry for the crappy picture.

Thanks

jim

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Assuming the cymbal at the left is a 14" hat, it's diameter is about equal to the radius of the big cymbal. I know its unusual, but I wonder if its bigger than a 24"

Thanks Jim, Glad that you won the set.On onto the cymbals when i did email them about the cymbals.Knowing that they were wrong on the bass drum size is a 14x20..This is what i got out of their reply 2 14",one 16",one 18",and one 20"..I did ask if the cymbals have any names on them they told me that they could not see a name. But to me the 14's,16.18. all look like Zild's to me look at the bell on them and the color. Now to the 20" it would say it could be a newer Zild not as old as the others .I also think that all the cymbals are not M.I.J. cheap cymbals if they were i would think they would be all bent to hell....Mikey

Looks like a 22" to me, but then....

Those cymbals look like-a 13 crash/splash,a pair of 14 HH's,a 20 and a 22/24.The big ride could be a big score,as I don't think many cheapo's went beyond 20".I'm guessing either a Zildjian or a Zilco.And the silvery ones-maybe Ludwig-Paiste's-or Krut,but they don't look bent,so maybe not Krut.

Thanks again...if they measured correctly that the bass is 20 and the big cymbal is 20, then the picture must be an optical illusion. i just love a good mystery- this one won' be solved till the middle of next week.

Back in the early 90's I played in Jack Grondin's studio. Jack used to be the drummer in .38 Special. He had a nice home studio in a building located across a bridge over a creek next to his home in Middleburg, FL. My girlfriends dad at the time was an engineer and Jack let him record at his place when he wasn't using it. One day I was in his studio sitting on his couch when I noticed a cymbal was behind the couch. I asked Jack about it because it was an old 70's A Zildjian 24" medium ride. He was cool and a really nice guy. He said that was the cymbal he used on Hold On Loosely. I was a teenager when I met him so I thought it was really cool. He wasn't a big rock star trip guy. He was cool and is now a preacher or something. Those 24" rides are huge though. On his regular Tama Artstar kit he had Paiste 2002 cymbals. They sounded wonderful and he let me use them on the recording I did in his studio.

I'm sure hoping they measured wrong and it's 24". From the picture, I just don't think it's 20"

Mystery solved. The bass is 20" and the large cymbal is 22". All of the cymbals are stamped 'Japan' on the inside of the bell. I was really hoping that the large one would be a nice surprise, but it is not.

Pictures to follow after I clean it all up.

Good: there's not a single scratch on the wrap. So far, they have cleaned up very nicely. The color is deep blue, about the shade of new dark blue jeans, with sparkle. The chrome lugs and hoops look very nice. A total of 2 lugs have scratches on them, that's it. The snare sounds really nice, even with the old heads. The shells are graduated thickness. Snare and rack tom very thin, floor tom thicker and bass even thicker (just like today's high end Gretsch: haha). One of the cymbals stands is vintage ludwig.

Bad: The floor tom is missing 3 tension rods, which are metric threaded, so none of my spares will fit. One of the bass drum t-rods is bent and likely not usable (see my wanted posting). Other than the one Ludwig cymbal stand, the hardware is very thin/cheap. The bass drum pedal is marked 'Pro' or some such nonsense.

Unknown: Do these cymbals have value? The tone is unusually dark. Even the largest ride has very little ping. Hard to describe, since I've never owned any before. I can't find anything like them on the bay.
