A new Yamaha project

Here's my latest project/Christmas present to myself. It's a Yamaha 20/13/16/14sn, 6 lug BD, so an entry level kit. I'm not sure of the exact age but i think it's a bit later than my Red Thunder kit although It does have the same shell construction - thin 6 ply birch and Lauan.

It came with its original hardware (snare stand, hihat, BD pedal and BD mounted cymbal arm), original HH cymbals and a 16" Paiste Stambul crash. It's in ok shape with no tears in the wrap etc but there is a bit of chrome missing off the mounts and tom holder and the typical rust inside the BD hoops. It should come up pretty good though.

These are the before pics. I'll post the after shots when she's done.

Looks sweet! I like that wrap. I've never owned a Yamaha drum... Maybe it's time to start looking around for a kit.

You the man Fayray you keep finding the old yamies. Thank's for keeping an eye out for my red thunder 13". One day it will show up. I had a gut about 4 weeks ago contacted me and said he had my missing tom and that he wanted 400$ lol i will never pay that. I would like to see the drum kit finished but i ain't that desperate to see it done.

They are very cool drums fishwaltz and you would like them. If you find one make darn sure that it is complete, it may not be easy to find the pcs that you would be stuck looking for.

Do you know exactly the year your Yammies come from? I´m only asking ´cause I don´t know when mine were built and maybe you can help. The wrap is the same, but the lugs look different. Also do mine have thin 3-ply shells with re-rings. And in lack of the matching, era-correct snareCryBaby I have to use my Pete-Erskine-Sig-snare that I got brand new in 1990. So if you ever want to get rid of your snare...x-mas3

(The original BD-hoops with matching inlay are still there - scored the wooden ones in the pic for very little money and thought I´d give it a try, but to me it makes no big difference on this BD. Think I attach the original hoops again.)

@Jurgen - I'm not sure of the exact age. I'd guess it's slightly later than the stuff from the '68 catalogue but not by much. The lugs on mine match the lugs on my Red thunder kit, as do the shells. Some wingnuts are different and the main difference is the tom mount off the BD which is the same as yours i think. The consolette system seems to have been superceded by this time. I suppose there could have been a transition to a newer lug design at this time too. I have a 13" identical orphan tom as well. Mine are 6 ply with no rings.

@drums2xs - one will show up one day, they sure are scarce though. I know the Yammies are not as desireable as the American kits but you don't see as many either. They'll have a rarity value over time I'd guess.

Below is a pic comparing a Star shell (left) with the Yamaha (right). As you can see they have 3 plies of birch (including the inner ply with horizontal grain) and 3 plies of Lauan. They are quite thin too.

@Jurgen...your kit has what are called "taillight or stoplight" lugs,which are more modern than Andrews. You can buy repros of them today at:

That's a cool wrap. I'm diggin' my Yamahas (Black oyster, wood hoops 8 lugs per side bass, nice set) and those look like keepers!
