Having recent restored an early 60s holiday
kit I am having trouble getting enough attack
from the drums. Is this common? Do any of you
have any experience with this? My modern maple kit has way
more attack and volume.

What type of drum heads are you using? I use(ed) coated ambassadors on all the Roger kits I have ever owned. Always perfect. If your ear is geared a certain way, clear ambassadors or clear pinstripes will give you more attack.
Coated Ambassadors or Emperors top and bottom (of course, with the exception of the snare side head) and a very "tight" tensioning will give you a lot of the good old fashioned attack.
