Recently sold a Pearl Chad Smith steel snare & it was fantastic, one of the better deals on cheezBay these days. Not sure why they don't hold their value because it's a great drum & can be had for under $100 if you look long enough.
Thoughts on steel snares
1968, 1974 & 1984 Rogers Dyna•Sonic COB
1971, 1976 Slingerland GK Sound King
1973 Slingerland Festival
1920's-40's Slingerland (US Military) Field Snares (6)
19?- Ludwig Field Snare (US Marines)
1960's Premier Gold Glitter Student Snare kit
1960's-? MIJ Snares (way-way too many)
Got my Yamaha steel 5.5x14 with 8 lugs. Snagged it for a super deal. Put new heads on it. By golly, this thing sounds gig ready to me. Sure, it's the least expensive snare I own, but sounds great to my ears.
The Shuffleman sold me one recently after it gets here I will let you know up to now 48 years playing it has always been supra's
Mike,
Post a review here for us please. I'm curious what you think of this one.
I'll tell you now though, before you hear it... I don't buy drums that don't sound great. I'm a drummer first, dealer second. I buy -for- drummers to sell -to- drummers. You're going to be happy with this one. Plus, the damn thing looks out-of-the-box new. Nice drum. Enjoy when you get it.
Don't forget, review please!
John

What kind of steel snare are we talking here? I have a newish 6.5 Supra that I love. I also have an old COB 5x14, but I prefer the 6.5 Supra. The 6.5 Supra (of any era) is one of the greatest drums, period. But, the Yammie steel 5.5x14 is nice for a change...and I think Yamaha makes a great one (in my opinion). At the end of the day, I enjoy the variety of maple and various metals.
ADG - This is the drum that MikeT is getting: Slingy Deep-Dish snare! Sounds killer, but I'll let Mike review it for you...
