Vintage Ludwig: alternatives for bassdrumlegs and tomholder? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi all

Playing a bit on my vintage Ludwig Mach 4 set (71) I was wondering if I could have some alternatives for mounting my 13" tom.

I don't want to use a snarestand because it dries out the sound in my case. But is there some modern tomholder that fits on the vintage ludwigs? maybe mapex or so? I was thinking just hanging it with a tomholder on a cymbalstand with a clamp....

Also, the bassdrumlegs don't have the metal points....so the bassdrum is moving forward quite a bit.....are there some modern alternatives for those?

Thanks!

First off, (the obvious) don't drill any holes. Dixon, and/or Gibraltar makes a bass drum anchor, (like Ringo used) that attaches to bottom front of hoop, with switchable spikes, or rubber feet which can really help. Think they're about $15.00. If you can't find a 70s Hercules tom stand, you could try a Rims style suspension mount on tom, and attach a mount that will fit a current stand, or clamp onto a cymbal stand. I believe you can find a currently made post of the correct diameter if you search, but not 100% sure.

OH - and if you're on a really tight budget, you could try tying a cord from your bass drum to your throne.

Why not just get correct spurs with spikes and mount the tom off of any old cymbal stand via the Ludwig bull horns and a multi clamp? Only thing is that the badge won't face forward...but thats not a huge deal is it?

I've had success keeping the bass drum from moving by putting velcro on the bottom of the bass drum pedal and then making sure the throne legs are on the drum rug. My weight on the throne along with the velcro on the bottom of the pedal keeps the bass drum from moving forward.

I would not change or drill any holes in the drums. As far a the tom mount tube i have them from the 70's for sell..On the bass drum legs you say that the points are bad or missing just re-file down the points on the legs...Mikey

I think I might have this kind off bass drum anchor for my bassdrum, just hope the metal doesn't damage the bassdrum hoops.....

The Rim Style Mount could be a good alternative, Although the mouting system reminds me somehow of some modern systems (the one attached to the tom), but maybe all the mounts are too thick for the ludwig

I will certainly not drill holes!!!!

Thanks for the offer of the tom mount, but I think the shipping to europe would be kind off expensive...

All good suggestions here. If your bass pedal has velcro on the base plate, and you're on carpet, it shouldn't slide. A rim-mounted bass drum anchor would provide additional help. Do you mean that your spurs have the rubber feet on them? If so, you could simply pull the feet off revealing the spikes and make sure they are holding into the carpet. If you're on a hard floor you probably won't find anything that will stop the drum from slipping without putting new spurs on it.

Pulling off the rubber feet is maybe the easiest solution! how I didn't think of that :)

I have a bass drum anchor, but noticed that the small rubber feet don't touch the ground when I attach it, probably it's made for when the bassdrum is sitting quite low.....it came with the drum...or I should experiment more with it

But I'll try just pulling off the rubber feet, would be very easy!
