Stop it, you're going to scare away the *straights! LOL

I attached some pix; 1. Nehru shirt, 2. 'Traditional' Beatle suit, 3. The Beatle suit version I owned and wore. Black felt collar. Wonder when those will come back into fashion? LOL One of the few fashions that never came around again... now that I look at it again, it -was- a cool suit!

Lingontega - sorry for the fashion hi-jack! Just having some fun...

John

I also wore one of those dreaded Neru Jackets in that era... Bit of a hoot now looking at old Pics..

Coincidental that this thread comes up just now.. Last weekend our lead guitarist was relating an incident that took place quite a few years ago in LA.... Whilst on his way to check out a Colin Hayes gig, whom our guitarist was managing at the time..(Colin is from the Aussie band "Men At Work"), He was accidently bumped to the pavement by Ringo, as Ringo barged out of a club at 90 MPH, Ringo being a little under the weather.... He was promptly helped to his feet and "dusted off" by an apologetic Barbara Bach.

Ringo also offered his apologies before driven off at speed.

The highlight of this encounter being the Barbara Bach "Dust Off"..

It has left an indelible impression...

Cheers

Ok, I need your collective eyes here for a sec. Look at the photo again closely. If you use the snare drum head (14") for comparison, it looks like Ringo is playing a, 12", 14", 20" kit! Did he ever play out with a kit that small? I don't think so, but from above, again, using the snare drum for size comparison, it sure as hell looks like it.

The brass looks to me to be, 13" hats, a 20" ride on his left and an 18" crash on his right side. Plus, the man is not sitting squarely behind the snare drum! He's literally sitting out in the middle of the kit between the snare and the floor tom, with his body angled to the left. And the distance between the rack and floor tom looks like a mighty long way to have to go to execute any runs around the kit. The way he's set up and where he is positioned in relation to the drums is just awkward looking.

What do you guys think of my drum size estimates. Look closely and visually use the snare head as a ruler. I'm curious to hear what sizes you guys see.

Fascinating photo...

I found this shot that appears to show the same kit/same set-up, from a different angle. Still looks like 12", 14", 20" to me!

Ringo most assuredly played that config. He had two kits in those measurements and toured with 'em. This was the early days of the group. Once he obtained the 22,13,16 config, he didn't wander from it much at all.

There are some interesting sites out there that document this stuff if you're interested.

I read somewhere that he didn't change heads much and that at one point Paul broke the snare head and fixed it with a piece of gum and that this remained on the drum for a long time (including recording sessions). Could be just a myth. Don't know!

they say as historians do that the downbeat kit was used to make Ringo look bigger on the Ed Sullivan show aka Beatles gear and he used a rogers swivel mount for hang tom as he did not like the way the luddy slipped all the time

There's several sites dedicated solely to Ringo's equipment including the changes in tom sizes, his preference for the Rogers swivo tom mount, and the temporary, white pearl practice set photographed in the Beatles rehearsal for their Ed Sullivan appearance. For a better examination of the wonderful overhead photo which started this thread, rotate the photo 180 degrees and view it from the perspective it was taken (from the front of the drumset, not the rear). Ringo's vocal mic stand becomes apparent, but where's the high hat pedal and his left foot?!! An awkward seating position indeed.
