Ludwig/Vistalite Question Regarding Mufflers Last viewed: 4 seconds ago

Hi!

I just picked up a 22/12/13/16 Vistalite kit, and someone removed the mufflers. The kit seems to be from 1977 based on the serials (all VERY close). The mufflers are over the badges (opposite the mounts), but instead of just having two holes like other Ludwig drums I have owned...these have four holes. The normal two and then two to each side (with a backing plate which is still attached occupying the other two holes).

I am curious what year/years they did the mufflers like this, and if a normal two hole muffler will fit the two vertical holes. Since I have the backing plates I think it should be pretty easy to find replacements if they were all the same. All I need for this kit is 3 mufflers, 12/13/16 bottom hoops, a 22 inch bass drum hoop with SS inlay, and some tension rods. The drums are in great shape. No cracks. Only a couple scratches. No rust. All rubber tips present. Short tom mount. Killer. Definitely worth a full restore. Just curious if anyone can answer my muffler question. I think I can figure the rest out on my own. If anyone has the parts I need feel free to drop a line.

Adam,This is what i know about these mufflers.Ludwig came out with the 4 hole muffler in 1978 so your set could be from 1977..On your question about a two hole muffler would work yes and no on these mufflers Ludwig made two types of the ones with two holes one was the knob hole was on top and the mounting screw was on bottom but they also made the muffler with the knob hole on bottom and mounting screw on top..Way to tell is were is the bigger hole that would be for the knob..Mikey

Bigger hole on the bottom. Cool. Ill be sure to look out for some like that. It looks like they make some new ones with the knob on the bottom. Might just go that route unless I can find a reasonable price on 3 vintage ones. Also I might have one or two in my parts bin. Haven't looked yet because Im out of town for the holidays.

Hi Adam, if you are asking about the 4 hole mufflers its my understanding that Ludwig only used these mufflers on the vistas from 77-79..If you are asking about the know hole on bottom Ludwig still does that.Mikey

Ha! I actually might be selling this kit after I get it back to all original, so keep an eye out if you are on the lookout for a nice affordable Vista.
