Replacing straps on drum cases

Loading...

I was doing some work up at our rehearsal space this weekend and realized as I was putting various drums away that I have almost no drum cases with intact straps. Does anyone have any advice on how best to attach new straps? I guess I can remove the ones that are on there and use small bolts in place of the rivets/brads, making sure to put the nuts on the outside so they won't scratch the drums. Is there a better way?

Here's a thread on the subject: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=15216ct:

Note my reply regarding nylon straps and pop rivets. Pop rivet tools are inexpensive and easy to use. I use mine frequently for fixing all kind of things.

Thanks, GG. I'll check at my neighborhood hardware store and see if they carry those. Any tips for removing the ones currently in there? Just drill 'em out?

Be very careful when drilling rivets out. EASY to go too far and punch through the case. Also, if you are drilling a rivet out of a plastic case you risk heating the plastic and ruining the repair or at least making a bigger hole than intended.... Plastic melts fast when that bit is flying...!

Riveters are cheap Home Depot etc. will carry them as will Sears and Ace and possibly Wal Mart I suppose. I like a large flange stainless rivet vs aluminum for strength and back it with a rivet washer. Figure the washer into the length of rivet so you don't buy too short....

Everything vwfreak said is correct. Here's a couple of pics of on of my tom cases. Get the appropriate sized washers (1/8" rivet - 1/8" washer) and rivets long enough to go through the strap, the case and the washers.

I wouldnt use a fastener intended to hold non-moving, very thin sheets of aluminum in place to repair a drum case handle. I have fixed many, many suitcase handles from the airport workers thrashing my stuff and I would use a carriage bolt on the inside and cut the length so that a cap bolt on top will fit securely. Before you cut it to length, screw a regular nut on the whole ways up to the carriage head so when you do cut it, you can unwind this nut and fix up the threads a bit to make it easier to get the cap nut on. Finally, a dab of loc-tite and this repair will outlast the drums....... IF you have to use a washer to keep the bolt from pulling through, just grind off the squared off section of the carriage bolt and use washers.

I fear that pop-rivet method would only create a false sense of security in your handle and you don't really want to put those cases to the test by dropping your drum down a flight of stairs.............

have a wonderful evening
