I thought I was bidding in the stratosphere on these babies and I was going to get them form sure. I bid my max at $530 days ago!

I went on there earlier today with about 9hrs left and Wow!.....I'm outbid - I thought if someone wants them that bad they can have em.

Nice bit of American drum building/playing history there. Some part of me almost jumped back into the frey...........My wife wants a new couch though haha.

Kona - you really have to love bongo's to bid five big-ones on a pair! I never realized vintage bongo's could fetch anywhere near that much in the marketplace. I learn something new everyday.

Sorry you missed out on them, you were damn close with your high bid.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Ya - these bongos in particular would be valuable in the "collector's" market. Tom Flores started to build his very nice Valje drums in Los Angeles in the 50's. I have a complete mid-70's set of congas including matching bongos that have the common Valje stickers above the conga handles = nice. But, these ones that were sold on eBay are realtively rare I believe because they have a different Valje sticker and the model was made for a very famous hand drummer (his name on the lable) - in the 50's maybe early 60's? There was a pair sold on eBay - I think in England recently - for over $400.

It's hard to tell how close I was because the winner may have put his MAX bid in at a $1000 or more - who knows. Mine was at $530 and I thought that it should have been enough to buy them considering the other ones that sold for 4 something.

I wouldn't let my Valje bongos go for under a $Grand ......so I can see how these could be up there and more.

Generally speaking I think Vintage drums of any kind are just catching up to the "real" vintage musical instruments market........don't you think?

Sorry you missed them, but I'm really glad to see top dollar being paid for nice vintage gear. To my eye, the bongos are obviously nice. They also possess the 60's beatnik vibe -for real!

Until this post, I'd never even heard of those bongos before. Thanks for sharing!

Sorry for the ending.

But, what a price!!

Though I don't know the vintage Bongo market, the price is amazing.

I'm not much in tune with the vintage bongo market either. but I did recently win a nice set of Gretsch - late 50's maybe 60-61 - bongos in a Coppery lacquer finish. I did nothing to them except a good cleaning - very gently though = no harsh cleaners. I paid a little over $200 and was very happy with that. I'm using them with my 58 Gretsch 4pc right now - mounted on the bongo stand I generally use for my Valje bongos........works for me.

Makes me wanna do my homework on vintage bongo's myself. If I were to see this exact same pair of bongo's at a flea market for $50 I would have just passed them up.

Ya - it would be easy to pass them up if you didn't know the badge and some of the history of the drum maker. Kinda like someone that is not interested and doesn't know about old drums and sees an old snare drum sitting there.....head torn....dusty... a little rusty looking (it's actually gold!) and saying to themself "Billy Gladstone - never heard of that company - can't be worth much."
