At a big Flea market on Treasure Island yesterday a nifty rockabilly drummer had a 60's set of silver Clubdates -minus mounted tom-.The keystone had a 10*** number .It had nickle hardware as well. A band member said the kit was from 1963. My question is"when did Ludwig put the rail on the bass?? This drummer didnt use the hoop mount because he is worried about splitting the hoop. He is a VERY HEAVY HANDED DRUMMER. aND USED 2 X 4 STICKS.And overshadowed the rest of the band....But it was a kool set

Back then could you order a bass drum with-out a rail???

ive got an early 60's pre serial 22" clubdate bass with no rail. these came with the hoop mounted clipper mount that you mentioned. they work surprisingly well. i have two kits that i use these on. 63 is most likely accurate for the date of that drum. most of the clubdate combos(bass and ride tom only) were configured this way. some of the complete clubdate kits also had the virgin style bass. mine has the top dead center disappearing mount for the cymbal.

I've had my hands on 3 club date sets of the same era within the last few months, and all had the rail mount on top as pictured in the Ludwig catalogs. It's not a rewrap, is it?

However, my experience from the early 70s was that you could order just about anything "special" from Ludwig through one of their dealers, but you might have to wait a while (sometimes months). I would imagine they were the same way in the 60s.

So, the possibility of getting one configured like the 50s club dates (with the hoop mount) in 1963 does make sense...

So... it was an "option" and not a special order. That makes even more sense!

BTW -- check out the picture in this thread:

It appears to be a 22" club date bass drum with NO rail mount and the disappearing cymbal mount right in the center...

My 59' 12"x20" club date bass drum has no mounts at all and never did. Virgin bass drums from that era must be a little more common than we all think they are.

Mark, not to go off-topic... but, the next project kit I get that needs paint, is going to get metallic-Gold lacquer. That thing just looks killer in gold. Now -that's- a rare and beautiful color!
