Nice score, are you from the Toldeo area?
1 1/2 hours south. Why do you ask?
Tommy - That is a beautiful and unique set of RK's. They're PERFECT! The customizations that the original owner performed are just that, 'custom touches' that made the kit a useful tool for him as a working drummer. Those personal touches, the cymbal clips on the toms etc. just add character to an already classic kit.
That's the deep, dark blue glass glitter on there. It's so dark because the other side is red glass glitter and as the red bleeds through over the years, it deepens and darkens the blue to the rich color you see on those drums.
You don't need to alter them or feel bad about the modifications. That is a killer set of RK's and they are yours!
Excellent score my friend. I love them just as they are. Wouldn't change a thing.
Congrats,
John
WOW. Man, I'm jealous!!
Those are some beautiful drums!! Did the original owner happen to tell you when he installed the new tom mount is the center of the bass drum? I wonder if he did that during the go go 60s, when drummers started using two mounted toms. I did the same thing (and I regret it now) on my Gretsch bass drum. I am currently dealing with just how to patch the holes I drilled 30 years ago.
Those cymbal mounts on the toms are TOO cool......never seen that before. And the cymbals with the Zildjian early 50s "deep cup" are awesome! Ya gotta get one more like that to replace the modern zildjian on there.....:)
Sure, all those mods kill the value, but so what?? This is a real piece of drum history.
I've gotta ask you...are you gonna keep those mods, or are you going to patch the holes, and revert the set back to the way the drums looked in 1952?

Well he told me that he changed out the tom holders not too long after he got the kit (what ever that means) He also said that the original rails just sucked! There was one on both sides of the bass drum. He said that is really sucks when your in the middle of a solo and the dam toms start moving around. So he changed them out and never had any more issues. I do have a 14 trans stamp that is one of my favorite crashes, that I will be changing out with that newer one. As far as putting them back to stock, not at this time. I`m going to play them and enjoy them. Right now I have 3 kits set up and I play them all!
Thanks for the kind words, Tommy
These are drums you don't see every day!
Simply beautiful! CONGRATULATIONS.
WOW! Those Kill! Love the cymbal mounts on the toms. A great story, I really dig meeting older timers than me who have been in the trenches and chating up a storm about equipment and gigs. I'm sure he misses them. Enjoy!
OK' I got them unpacked , set them up and played um. Very disappointed! these RK`S sounded like crap! LOL Not !! 1st time that I have played me some RK`S and OMG!! I did not touch a lug and every drum sounds awesome! Now I understand why people say what they do about these old RK`S. Here are some pics, this is how the original owned had the set them up. Yes I know, lots of mods, but he told me that these drums were his tools for 59 years and he set them up so they were the most efficient and user friendly. The rack tom cymbals stands are Oaklawn Camco Very happy guy right now . Here ya go.
You know Tommy, I've tried to be upbeat & supportive about you finding this horrible set of junk, but I can no longer con you into thinking that these are that great...sorry, but my conscious finally got the best of me! Somehow, I feel partially responsible for you buying these "crimes against humanity", so I'm willing to take them off your hands...and even give you $25 extra for your trouble!....no-no-no, you don't have to thank me!...just PM me & I'll tell you where to deliver them.
Again, sorry for my betrayal!
