Opinions on old Ludwig kit? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Hey all,

Someone has an ad up in my city (Ottawa, Canada) - they're selling an old Ludwig kit, but very few details are included in the ad. There's only the one picture, and I'm not much good at id-ing old Ludwig kits in the first place.

Comes with everything in the picture, including some unspecified Zildjian cymbals. That's all I know right now.

Is this a....60's kit? 70's?

Anyway, the guy is asking $1000. Thoughts?

(Thanks in advance for your input.)

Wow, really? Cool!

Alright then, I'll bust over and see it today, then...

Anything in particular I should be on the lookout for?

From the pictures this looks like a closet lurker... I can't quite make it out, but the heads look original also.

What I mean by a 'closet lurker' is this kit may have been purchased (new?), played for a while and then stuffed away into a closet when the owners interests changed. Those are the best kind as long as the drums were kept dry.

VM2K is on the mark about the stands and snare. Check the lugs for over tensioning, the floor tom and bass drum leg and spur mounts and the wood around them for cracks, and the condition of the wrap and badges. Check the rims for dents, and the bearing edges if you can... standard stuff to look for. See if the snare has pitting, rust on the stands, etc...

If the cymbals are the same vintage as the drums (my bet) and all Zildjian, (A's or better) you have yourself a real deal there IMHO.

Wow, ok...I'm excited, then.

I'm definitely hoping for some high-quality old cymbals, too.

If they are A's, will it say on them? Don't the old ones just have stamps, and not any screen printing?

Yep, definitely looks like a "closet lurker" to me! This is the Hollywood outfit and appears all original. The stands pictured are the cataloged ones for this kit. The Supra appears very clean. If the cymbals are period correct, than they are most likely Zildjian A's. They don't appear to be Paiste. For someone looking for a beautiful vintage Ludwig kit, with all stands AND great Zildjian cymbals, $1000 asking price is a bargain! I say go for it!

Yep, none of that nasty screen printing, at least on the earlier 70's stuff. I think they may have started the printing in the 70's though. Did a quick internet search - here's a 70's stamp.

There will be more. Be patient and keep an eye on your local Craigslist, newspaper, thrift stores, and flea markets. I just snagged a snare I'd been wanting for 3 years.

Early 70's kit should have clear interiors. After 72 went to granitone interiorsLook into the air holes to see if there is a date stamp, from the badge,bd spurs and tom mount looks like 70-72.It does seem like prices on vintage drums are all over the place lately. If those are A zils or better that kit is a real good deal IMO even if it is a granitone int,a super deal if clear int pre 1973.
