1959 Ludwig transition badge snare Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Hey Ludwig fans...

I have just acquired a vintage Ludwig snare. I paid $50 for it at a local flea market. I have been playing for many years & own and treasure a vintage gretsch kit, but have never owned any Ludwig drums & know very little about them.If anyone can offer any help, Knowledge & advice, my plan is to restore this drum as best as poss to its original condition but making it as playable too (I'm a player not a collector) It has a date stamp inside that says Nov 2 - 1959, then the letter "B" in black chalk/crayon. It also has the number "14" in white chalk in side the shell too - I'm assuming this is just a size ref. The original badge is half missing but it was clearly a Ludwig Keystone badge. It's 6 1/2" deep. I know this was a transisitional time for Ludwig. It had a modern snare throw off but the snare butt says WFL on it. I would like to get the original throw off (I believe a P48?) and replace the badge.

I am looking to get the bearing edges recut.

Any comments would be most welcome!!

Pics below...

Cheers!

that will be a great snare. it appears to be a 6 lugger. ive got one that size but its an earlier 48-52 badge when they called them supreme concert models. most people call them a 6.5 pioneer. yours appears to be mohagany interior, would be poplar center ply and maple exterior ply since it was a painted shell. if it were me, i'd stain or clear that maple once you got it good and smooth. yours would also have had the transition badge 59ish-60ish,gold with the blue in it. great drum.

Thanks Mike,

Its an 8 lugger tho, must be my pics. Yes I intend to keep it natural finish - in fact I'm thinking about wether I laquer it myself or get someone who really knows what they're doing. I got a Cape cod metal polish cloth yesterday to get the nickel back up to standard - just need an original nickel rim now and the proper P48 throwoff & some replacement wires as the ones on there were a little battered.

I'll keep y'all posted.

I have found some holes drilled for an un-named replacement strainer...

Should I dowel these and rub them back or use a good matching filler??

Filler will be fine, Meat. Strainer screw holes are small. Save a little sawdust from sanding the shell and just mix up a paste with it with a very little carpenters glue. Instant matching filler!

Best of luck with your resto project. Got my popcorn and I'm cozy in my Barcalounger ...

Too many great drums to list here!

So a small update for y'all,

I finally found someone last week that I trust to do the laquer job on this shell. Turned out that the father of a friend of mine is a craftsman in wood finishing so am really excited to get it back in a week or two's time. He is going to fill and match the holes from the retrofitted strainer and apply a clear hi gloss laquer.

While I have been waiting I sourced the correct Ludwig strainer and cleaned up the nickel on all the hardware.

Now just waiting on a NOB top hoop to come up at the right price.

I will post pics of the finished shell when I get it back.

Excited!!!!!

Cheers all
