Your "desert island" snare drum choice Last viewed: 14 minutes ago

We're all familiar with the opinion polls that ask what specific item in a category would we choose to take with if marooned on the proverbial "desert island". You've already chosen your record album, book, food, movie, etc. We are to assume that the island has the proper amenities to support the favorite item. Let's now consider our individual choices for the one and only snare drum that could accompany each of us to our own "desert island". We should assume that the island already has a complete drum set of our choosing complete with cymbals, sticks, etc.

My hunch is that the Luddy huggers will come out in force for their metal drums. The Rogers guys will probably vote for the Dynasonic. My "desert island" snare drum is the Slingerland (or Leedy equivalent) wood shell mid 1960's snare drum with either six or eight lugs. I prefer it to have an internal muffler and the very simple student or Rapid model throw-off. Fit it out with plain Ambassadors coated top and clear bottom. I tend to prefer the simpler six lugger for it's minimal maintenence and tweaking requirements. This is the drum that feels and sounds to the way I prefer a snare drum to feel and sound. If, for some reason, a Slingy or Leedy was not available for my trip to exile, a wood shell 1960's Rogers Luxor six lugger would do.

Let's hear about your choice.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Although I have several, including Ludwig, Noble & Cooley, and Tama, I would take my '73 Rogers Dynasonic onto the island with zero regret.

I like this question, and it has me thinking..... As some of you know, I am a Rogers collector but I wouldn't take a dynasonic with me (no offense intended to those who would). I would want something with more character.

I like leedybdp's thoughts re less lugs = his sound and feel. I would also want something that has more dimensions to the sound than just crack so I could keep myself entertained. I love the feel of a 6 or 8 lug drum. I also like the extra depth of sound a 6.5" drum provides. I wouldn't want to take my 6.5 wood Powertone with me due to what the salt air might do to the shell.

Therefore, the winner is my 6.5x14 COB Cleveland Powertone which is a bit of a beater. Already has a few dents in her so I wouldn't care about the salt air or coconuts falling on it not to mention it always sounds good and has a great tuning range.

I would also try to take these as a stowaway because nothing says desert island, palm trees and coconuts like bongos!

I would take the largest available Ludwig & Ludwig marching snare drum from the 1920's, calf heads, gut snares and all, with me.......

Now, stay with me.......think about this for a minute.....you're stranded on a desert island.....you have said snare drum with you......sure would make a great signaling device for a passing ship now wouldn't it? :p

My 1948-52 WFL "Ray Mckinley" (WMP) would be the one as of right now. LOVE that thing.

Right now.....

I would have to say my Cadillac Green Lacquered Lang/Gladstone 7x14 snare drum with Gold Plated hardware. I will have to wait.....Christmas?:Santa:....because the drum is being built right now.

AND

in the same "tone" as Mr. Powertone (love your bongos by the way)....I would take my mid-70's Valje Congas...the whole set = quinto, conga, tumba, supertumba and bongos...they would be a perfect fit on the fantasy desert isl.

It would make a bigger fire than a 5" deep snare or a metal one..........just kidding.

I'd take a late 70's 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty...........if only I could get mine back from the guy I sold it to 15 years ago.

I would go with my late 30s Radio King. She is already beat up, the lugs are pitted up, the finish is stripped. It would look like it belonged on the island, but it still sounds absolutely incredible.

1973 Slingerland Phantom 13,16,22
Late 30s Slingerland Radio King- 7x14
SJC Custom Snare Pink Sparkle- 8x14
62 Slingerland COB Radio King- 5x14

Acrolite. The salt air wouldn't affect its finish and it will sound just like a Supra (which is the best snare drum in existence!)...yep...Acrolite!
