1963 Leedy Drums Question

Loading...

Hi folks. I'm new to the forum. I've been drumming for about 23 years now, but don't know a lot about vintage drums. My father in law was an old school be bop drummer, who passed about 7 years ago. The family has been storing his belongings in a storage unit for several years. Included is a 1963 Leedy Sparkle Kit, with 2 mounted toms, floor tom, kick, snare + Zildjian HH and cymbals. They are asking me what the value of this kit may be. I have done some research and found that the kit was actually made by Slingerland, since they bought the rights to the Leedy name in the 50's. Couldn't find much as far as value for the whole kit. Any help is appreciated.

Cheers!

Yea, I know pics would help. Unfortunately, I am in L.A. and the kit is in storage in Atlanta. The family doesn't have any pics to share with me. I have seen the kit and would say it's in good (not great) shape. A drummer is coming over to look at it tomorrow and my Bro in-law was just hoping I could give him a price range or starting point.

can't speak to the value of 'em, but you're dealing with some seriously awesome tubs... they're basically Slingy's with prettier lugs. too cool.

Hard to tell you value with out any photos..Some many questions what badge's,color, size's of drums, what snare over all condition of the drums ete,ete..With out knowing or see any of that i would start with 600.00 or so but then again your set could be up to 1,500.00...Mikey

If you care about that kit at all, don't let them sell it.

they probably see dollars, not their true worth. that drumset will likely end up parted out on ebay or rewrapped or god knows what. that drum set meant something to somebody once and it should continue to be appreciated.

if you could care less about the set and the buyer is a morale person, whom seems to gereraly care or get excited about the drums, let it go.

it' is also of note that with the bad economy and all, now is not the time to sell a vintage kit, but it's definetly the time to buy one.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks for the input everyone. I definitely prefer to keep the set for myself if the family is cool with that. I am the only drummer left in the family and would cherish that drum set for years to come. I have made the family aware that I would like to keep the drums, but also understand that this was their inheritance and the decision is ultimately theirs.

Next time I'm back in Atlanta (if they haven't sold it), I will take some photos to share. If they don't get offered more than $1000.00, I may just buy it off them myself.

Rock on Keep on Pl

$1000 for the drums and cymbals sounds like a pretty decent deal. Depending on the condition of the kit and the kinds of cymbals, it might be a screaming deal. I think the cool thing for you both (you and whoever is actually going to sell the drums in your family) is to do the $1000 deal. For you, it's a good deal and you get to keep the drums in the family. For them, they get a decent chunk of change, they don't have to deal with craigslist flakes or eBay fees, and they know that the drum kit is kept in the family. Win/win.

Oh, and post pics if/when you get it. Win/win/win. :D

Thought I would come back with an update.

The family decided to let me have the drums. They shipped them out to Los Angeles about a year ago to the day. Cleaned them up a they are in very good condition. 20 inch kick, two 12 inch mounted toms ( I only use 1 of them), 16 inch floor tom and 14 inch snare. It's gold sparkle with Zildjian Avedis cymbals. I love this kit so much, I now play it exclusively. My poor Pearls are sitting in a corner. Still haven't taken photos, but I will soon and post them here.
