Please excuse a newbie here if I make some stupid vintage drum mistakes!!I am looking to buy a mid 60's Ludwig 24x14 bass.I would prefer Champagne sparkle finish.I do not play so I am sure you are asking why do I wanted to buy.I am a big Rascals and Dino Danelli fan and from the research I have done,I have been told that in '66-7 he used this style/size bass drum and I am trying to make a replica of the his drum with the Rascals logo, correct color, etc.I may eventually try to make up his complete kit but for now just want to focus on the bass.I have the front skin being painted with the Rascal logo,so I am looking for a nice Ludwig to install this front skin.Let me know what you may have or know of.I am willing to pay the going price for the right drum. Thanks for letting the new guy on board and for any additional info and help that will lead me to the correct drum. Thanks again !! WANTED !! 60's Ludwig 24x14 Bass Last viewed: 5 days ago
Here is a clip of them on ed Sullivan,Dino he's on silver sparkle kit. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov3LnZ58b4k[/ame]
Looks like there is some history here. Ed Sullivan video shows what looks to be a silver sparkle super classic. 1st photo appears to be a silver/black/silver downbeat-type configuration. 2nd photo appears to be a champagne sparkle kit. 3rd photo, I dunno-- could it be a 24" kick? Hard to tell for me. But if it is a 24" from the 60's era, it would be quite a rare item. The 24's for kits became more common in the 1970's. In the 60's era, I've generally only seen those sizes for marching bass drums. You could consider doing a marching-to-kit bass conversion project if you really need something from 1966-1970 but frankly I think it might be a big headache trying to find a 60's 24" in champagne sparkle, marching bass or not.
If Dino's kit did in-fact have a 24" champagne sparkle bass, I bet it was specially-ordered.
If you are only intending this project to be a showpiece that looks like 60's Ludwigs-- and are not into the nuances of sound between different eras of Ludwig production-- you may want to consider acquiring some late 1970's or 1980's Ludwig orphan shells and having them re-wrapped in champagne sparkle. You can acquire reproduction 60's-style Keystone badges from eBay. The lugs on the drums have always looked *virtually* the same. Just stay away from any drums that sported the "modular" tom mounting hardware because it looks very un-sixties.
Offer sent with pictures to above link.
Amplifiers switched to standby.........

I know, I know, it's only eight lugs, not ten!
I've been in touch with DinoD, and I have to say.....
22", 24" lugs, mounts, original or after market, red sparkle, champagne, or even sale or no sale.....
whatever! THANKS for reminding me just what a fantastic bunch of musicians The Rascals were.
Sincerely,
Glen
Thanks for all the info guys and thanks Glen for the offer and education! But now I am wondering if it is a 24" kick I am actually looking for after reading Slingalud post.Maybe I should be after a 22" instead. The look and style drum I am trying to clone is the one Dino is playing in the video of "I've Been Lonly too Long" on YouTube.Sorry,I'm not good at attaching links, but if you search Rascals and look for the sub title great live medley you will find it.It shows a red Rascals logo,Ludwig logo on top and bottom of front skin.If you guys have a chance to check this out and let me know what the experts think.I would like to duplicate the same mounts in case I later want to assemble the complete set. Thanks again for helping the new guy.Jim
On a side note, check out eBay auction #320692596445.Is this what I am looking for? Does this have a double tom mount that could be changed or what did Dino have on his?
Thanks to the great info from Slingalud,I need to be looking for a 22x14 mid 60's Ludwig kick w/Champagne Sparkle instead of a 24x14.Any leads or additional info would be great. Thanks guys!!
OK, After watching the half dozen live video clips they have from the 60s, he is playing a 14x22", 8x12" and 16x16". The bass drum on both his silver sparkle sets as well as his champagne sparkle set are clearly 22s with a cymbal arm mount And a rail mount with the arm extension removed. Looks like a regular Super Classic sets with a 12" rack tom instead of a 13". If they were special order, none of the 12" rack toms would have the tom mount installed....All of the 12s show the mounts as well as the bass drums meaning they are not even virgin bass drums. That will make your hunt cheap, as in the 350 range for a 14"x22" Super Classic bass drum in Silver Sparkle and maybe 450.00 for one in Champagne Sparkle, in good to excellent condition. In this clip the rail mount is extremely easy to see as is the size of the drummer in relation to the bass drum. Barely past 5' or 16" arms fully extended LOL Looks like your seach will be easy and inexpensive...Great Live Medley
Hi Slingalud, there's a few points here I don't agree with. The rack tom has to be a 9x13 because it has large lugs...an 8x12 would have had small lugs at this point. Also, I believe it's very possible that the bass drum is a 14x24, with the proportions it dwarfs the 13" rack tom in comparison to a 14x22. As you said "The size relation between the tom and the bass drum is a dead givaway as to the size of the bass drum." and if you were thinking the rack was an 8x12, this makes me think it was indeed a 14x24 bass drum.
Also, he's sitting on a Ludwig canister throne, which tended to be 24" high, and you can see from the side with the cushion being pushed down, it's actually lower than the bass drum. Dino was coming out of big band drumming and it wouldn't at all surprise me to see him using a bigger bass drum.
Thanks,
Bill
I always thought he used a bigger BD too.........

Hi Bill, I definately thought I was looking at 12" rack tom, so that means you are absolutely right, it is a 14x24", my mistake, I shouldnt have been so quick to assume he was playing a 12". Thanks for Calibrated eyes...I must be getting old...think I'll just go lay down awhile...LOL
