The Pawn Shop Attic Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So I'm down on Main St. (literally) rooting around pawn shops trying to find one more l-arm and I go in Uncle Sam's http://www.unclesamspawnshop.com/ and he has a pretty fair amount of percussion stuff including a cool TQ Sunrise Vistalite set and a 70's white Slinger kit up on the "marked ridiculously high priced so these will never sell shelf" and in the "drum room" there looks like mostly junk just stacked in loose order the requires very careful stepping to get through. Probably 20 snares and 5 mixed kits piled up on each other.

So I asked the young fellow working there, "Is this all the drum stuff?" he says, "Oh no, we got the attic and the bar full of drums but the owner never puts any of that stuff out anymore." He goes on to say, "He"s been in business 50 years and I bet there is stuff up there from the first day."

Well I'm getting a little giddy and just had to ask.. "Can I see the attic?" "Yeah.. I like going up there," he says..and follows with "but I don't know if it's a musicians dream or nightmare." (I'm not a musician so it was just interesting to me.)

So behind the counter, around a corner, down a little hall, and up the narrow stairs we go and yep the attic is FULL of drums and guitars and stands and cases and drums and guitars and stands and cases in huge jumbled pile that you literally have turn sidewise to walk through carefully placing every step.. a few easy to see Keystones and Black/Gold ovals.. Vistalites, Sparkles, Satin Flames, WMP, Solids, Ducos, Tiger Stripes, just a bunch of drums, I'd guess 20 or 30 old kits worth in various states of disrepair. I was just kicking myself for not knowing more about drums. Mixed in with the drums were probably 400 guitars hanging and piled among the various cases.

Alas.. no L-Arm sticking out of the pile but I have to say it was an interesting 20 minutes.. I'm taking my camera back to see if he'll let me snap a couple photos so I can research if anything up there is worth making an offer on.. and maybe try to find out more about this bar he mentioned.

If you're ever in Columbus, Ohio.. swing by Uncle Sam's on Main Street and ask to see the attic. Make sure you park close and walk fast.

I'm in Cinci, I must say I'm a little intrigued. Are there old cymbals too, or just the drums (as if that would be some sort of let down!).

Thanks.

Yeah.. I saw cymbals in the piles.. some in bags and some just laying on the floor. Again I don't have a clue on what the value of the equipment might be??? I just wish I knew more about this stuff.. and could recognize it just by sight. I can recognize the Vistalites, at least two sets of those up there, and I can recognize the Ludwig Keystones and I saw several of those. And of course the Slingerland Ovals.. I didn't dig deep enough to see if they were Chicago or Niles.. I didn't see any Clouds or brass dog tags or Shelbyville red badges..

It is so hard to move around the stuff and you're always thinking the whole mess is going to come crashing down... the young guy that works there, he's a guitar player, told me Fridays and Saturdays are the best time because they have three guys working in the back and somebody has to be with you up in the attic... the other drums are stored in a closed Bar behind the pawn shop... not a barn which is what I thought he said.

I did ask about pricing on some unbadged bowtie lug drums in the "drum room" that where part of a mismatched set that is just beat to crap... and he wanted $300 and wouldn't break the set.. and he had closed S Chicago Slingerland mahagony marching snare I wanted but he wouldn't let it go for under $50 (which I thought was high). So I don't know if there are any bargins to be had amid the chaos or not...

If you are so inclined PM me if you head up 71 and we can excavate as a team, so one of us can call for help if the pile collapses. DOH

So I have discovered the owner of the Pawn Shop is extremely sensitive regarding people going up to the attic... in all likelihood had anybody but a "new guy" offered to help me that day, the attic never would have been mentioned.

I got a couple shots with my cell phone camera.. they?re attached

I'd like to help the shop out by just doing a photo inventory with a little data sheet on each kit or special piece of percussion equipment they have... mostly just for my own edification.

But? I?m not sure how to offer without getting my butt kicked down Main St.

I have a few more shots but 5 attachments is the limit.

If I lived anywhere close to that - I would be there with checkbook, visa card, cash and/or firstborn (not much value there) to get some of that "junk."

I see....Slingy, Kent, Ludwig, Premier, Rogers, Pearl...that cool old gold-wrap reflective one with the grid pattern is an old Japanese wrap. Looks like there's also a Luddy Standard in Bronze (or is it Gold ? ;)) Strata....

What the heck ? Is the guy just gonna keep that stuff up there forever ?

Someone can RETIRE off of selling that stuff !!!!!!!!!

Dunno whether to laugh...or cry....
