Show me your re-stained drums Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

The red/orange on this 80s Yamaha Tour Custom had to go. My initial thought was to wrap them, but the cost would have quickly exceeded what I paid for the set. So... I started hand sanding them to bare wood (birch) and now I'm thinking about stain colors. I've used Transtint wood dye with good results - and would like to see other transformations - show me what you've done.

Thanks

jim

I have used the Transtint that I got from DrumMaker.com with good results. Just don't get it on your hands unless your working on Halloween. I redid an old cortex wrapped Ludwig bass drum, and more recently I built a solid stave 7"X13 maple tom that I put nickel Clubdate hardware on it, I was very happy with my results. Like what you did to improve the Yamaha's. Gotta love red!

I did these not long ago.

They were previously wrapped, I removed the remaining glue with Xylol.

I sanded down to 220 with an orbital sander, then 00000 steel wool.

Minwax dark walnut stain, three coats and wiped each off after 30 minutes.

Nice work - keep 'em coming. EZduzzit- Do you think a much darker green color would be possible with Transtint? I'm leaning towards their Blue, but generally like very deep colors.

I really like this bass drum hoop treatment - blond on the inside. That's part of the plan.

Yes I do! Auto. pilot simply use less water and more powder and three or four coats will make a nice rich deep green, however the darker the color the less the wood grain stands out, and it starts looking more like a paint job than a stain job. What you see in my pictures is only two coats. Just remember to make way more than you will actually use so you can match another add on drum at a later date. Don't store it in your garage if it could freeze in winter. Also, I don't use steel wool to sand with, Kevin, because the extremely small fibers react to various chemicals and tannins in the wood and turn black as they oxidize, I get better results with 600 grit emory cloth either wet or dry, and a new beeswax cheese cloth rag to remove dust before staining. I apply with a foam brush, work fast, and don't go back over your work till your ready for a complete 2nd coat. And for goodness sake, throw the cat and the dog out of the room before you start. And oh yea, don't work outside under a tree. It's the little things that matter sometimes.

Really nice work everyone...........inspiring

Here's mine in a natural stain.

A pieced together kit w/ Ludwig 6-plys.

20x14, 14x13, 12x8, 5x14. I wanted to match the stain on the 14x13, I had no luck so I took them to a fella who could.

Cheers kevins, I like yours too.

When I got the shells back I could'nt believe how well they matched the 14x13.

Since those pics, I've added a L-arm cymbal mount on the bass drum for the ride.
