Gretsch Listing on Ebay Last viewed: 1 day ago

I started using this site about a year ago when I started cleaning up my dad's old Round Badge set. Before I decided to repaint the interiors and clean all the grime off the Zildjan K's (or toss them out and buy a set made in America instead of Istanbul), I looked stuff up here to get me pointed in the right direction and help date the set.

Last night I came upon a post on E-bay for a 50's Round Badge Floor Tom, and my eyes kind said it was more of a sixties drum. I could be wrong, but if it was fifties wouldn't the leg mounts have the heads for the screws on the outside?

I also thought that all 3 ply shells had a clear lacquer coat and not the silver interior.

I'm not calling the guy who has put this up a liar. I'm just wondering if I have learned anything looking through all these threads.

Silver paint started in '61 or '62 (?), if I'm not mistaken. Not clear on how they "date" their drum. Too bad the interior tag is missing. Legs look like 80's or later and the pictures are terrible (when will people care about the pics they take/post?). Good luck with the price; maybe better pics will justify the $$.

I wouldn't call the guy/gal a liar. More like, misinformed (?).

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I'd say - from what I've read - silver sealer started in the 50's. I've read where Gretsch started with silver sealer and 6ply at the same time....late 50's. But I've also read.....from people that build Gretsch drums....that 6ply started in mid 50's. So maybe there were drums with silver sealer then as well. I think back then when they started introducing different product it was not a cut-n-dry thing....like "it's Jan 01 - we're rolling out 6ply drums with silver sealer." It may have been a gradual thing.

Yes - my three ply Gretsch have silver sealer. This kit has a mix of 3 and 6 ply shells (it was common in the transition period) but the shells are the same thickness. You can easily see that each ply on the 6ply shell (my floor tom) is thinner than the individual plys on my three ply shells. My drums were bought all at the same time...as a kit.. new in 1960. Gretsch told me the "main" transition from 3 to 6 ply occurred in 1958 and they did not make 3ply shell after that date. Others I've spoke to have told me the transition started a few years earlier. The Gretsch paper tages showed up in 62 I believe.....there could be earlier ones out there ....maybe.

I sold a Midnight Blue 24" BD 3 ply kit with painted insides to Japan YEARS ago,and the guy contacted me,and told me someone painted the insides silver,as it was a sloppy job, with some paint splatters on the bearing edges.

I told him I had seen a few like that...........if he believed me or not,I am not sure.
