More Radio King Spur Questions!! Last viewed: 16 hours ago

Hey guys,

I attached a pic of the bass drum in this 1959/1960 Radio King "combo" I am going to pick up later this week. The kit consists of a 5.5x14 clamshell RK snare, a 9x13 RK tom (with what appears to be original RK calf heads), and this 14x22 bass drum. The logo head appears to be original (and calf). The inlays need a little help, the hoops need paint, there is some rust and pitting on the claws, and the finish is kinda yellow but I think it still looks really nice and could clean up to be a solid set (with the addition of a floor tom). No extra holes in anything....missing a few parts here and there that should be easy to find.

The question I have is about the spurs:

Ive seen clip ons, the basic "stage band" disappearing spurs, Ive seen the thin and thick set o matic era spurs, but I have never seen these transition type. They seem to be kind of...well....a transition between clip ons and diappearing! The Slingerland book doesn't really cover them...they only show one kit with them that I can find and it is a "2N-Jobbing Outfit". The wing nut seems un-original. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

This bass drum definitely has the full "Gene Krupa Deluxe Radio King Ensemble" thing going on though...has the two "ride" and "splash" cymbal mounts...not the cheaper "stage band" disappearing type.

Anyway....VM2k, Kevins, Gonedrumming, Im looking your way cause you guys seem to be the experts on these things! Is this a cool thing to pick up? how hard is it to find another spur if I need one? I never even knew they made this type!

Attached is a screen shot. I couldnt get the pics downloaded from the account they were sent on. EDIT: Just added a pic of the snare badge to confirm for anyone that needs it. Obviously the curly S Chicago badge. Same badge on the bass drum. No badge on the tom.

Thanks for any help!

The Sound King lugs came out in 1955,so your drum can't be any earlier then that.........

I have had RK drums with those spurs too,so factory.......

Didnt even think of that. Doh

You are right then-58 or earlier.

Anyone have an idea when these spurs started/ended?

Looks like the badge is 1956-1959 but we can confirm that the nickel hardware puts it 58 or earlier....well actually probably not because who knows how much nickel was left over and how far into 59 it went.

Blair do you have an idea about the wing nut? That doesnt look factory does it?

Adam, the pic who is using this drum this way? but no that mount with the cymbal arm in it is a factory leg bracket mount, but the t- handle isn't factory, this bass drum would have either the straight spurs or the curved ones here is a pic of both of them.

It was just set like that for the picture. Not sure what is all there and what isnt in terms of cymbal arms/spurs, but it sounds like you are saying the two pics you attached are examples of what should be there and what is currently shown doesnt look the same.

I guess ill have to wait until i get it to be sure whats all going on with it.

Yes, your correct on my assumptions,If I'm looking at the pic correctly you have the bass drum upside down or sideways to Illustrate the spur mounts? correct? if so then yes the two legs I've shown you, are on your want list to complete the bass drum to make it go Boom!.

The handle would be a timpani one, just like the BD rods, but with a hole tapped with threads into the middle of it

I'm getting a vibe of 1958 off the picsExcited

Here's some pics of mine.....

Just confirms what those other cats were saying, not that they need a confirmation from me..... they have a TON more experience than myself.

The mount is nickle, but my lugs/claws are chrome....

Just wanted to especially show that one side of the leg that goes into the mount is flat, and the receiver is squared off on the bottom.
