70's ludwig rockers??

Loading...

im looking for a blue/olive 14 or 15" ludwig tom, and found this "70s" one on ebay.. the guy said "It is fitted with Rocker style hardware (original to the drum). " so i messaged him, and he said they started making rockers in the late 70's.. i researched this before i messaged him and everything (including a couple threads here) confirmed my initial belief that the first instances of rockers werent until the 80's. is this legit? heres the ebay link:

Well....that one appears to be an 80's Rocker mounted tom. The Rocker series didn't start being made until about 1982. Hard to say exactly when it was made since it has no badge and there are no interior shots of the drum, if in fact it is a Ludwig shell. It could be any old shell with Ludwig hardware bolted onto it. I'd ask for more pics if you are serious about it.

Sorry asmonica that you doubt my integrity. I am sending this link, which is coincidently from this web-site as well......

The drum shell is stamped 1979 on the inside shell from the Monroe, NC facility. Water under the bridge though since the drum sold - just didn't want someone thinking I was trying to dupe them.

seller of said drum in question.

If they were stamped 1979 inside the drum, you sure had one of a kind! They didn't make those drums until the early 80's...also Ludwig wasn't in the Monroe, NC factory until 1987.......DOH

Without making more guesses about the drum. What is the interior and the number of Ply's.

So I'm curious. Our page in two different places:

"Introduced in late 70's as a budget drum kit replacing the Standard"

timeline: "The Rocker Series from 1984 - 1994 had 4ply shells with clear laquer inside."

Late 70's becomes a 1984 introduction? Is there a typo? Is there is missing stage in the timeline?

I'm sitting here with my Rob Cook book on my knee and not able to line things up with the VintageDrumGuide page for Rockers. Rob Cook has the original Standards go away 1972ish, then a "Combo" from 1978-1980, then reuse of the Standard name for a line, and then Rocker 1984ish.

Anyone care to clarify for me?

The 1979 shell could of course be an old stock 6 ply maple shell (Classic) used later with Rocker lugs to make up the drum. I understand the date stamp went on when it was made and placed in the warehouse, not when it was used in assembling a drum. But I'm no expert...

Once the juices are flowing, a sold Rocker is not just water under the bridge.

The sentence should read

"Introduced in late 70's as the Combo a budget drum kit then replaced by the Standards in the early 80's"

I think the drums themselves since the combo were the "Little Brother" of the top line drums. Combo - Standard - S/L Series - Rockers.

They were not all "Rockers" as we know them with the B/W Badges

I updated the page to reflect the clarifications and cleaned up the wording to read better.

Thanks,

David, I can't thank you enough for the wealth of information this website provides. If there are even a few more little quibbles like that, this is still the bee's knees for vintage drum info bar none! Thanks!
