I just scored this on ebay last night.....looks to be a 1963 Slingerland Gene Krupa 8-lug COB Sound King snare drum. Looks in great shape too! This should go nicely with my Slingerland be-bop kit resto.....real low serial number, and the shell appears to have crimped snare beds. Also, no lines on the shell! This has got to be rare, as its the only one with no lines that ISN'T steel that I've seen in recent times.....definitely looking forward to cleaning this one up, fitting new heads, and getting a set of Puresound vintage zoomatic snare wires for it.

What do you guys think? Slingy experts, comment welcome! :D

Am I correct in thinking that this version without the lines came out in 1963 and lasted until 1964? Seems that in the 1965 catalog, the lines on the shell had appeared.....

I think I got it fairly cheap too. I'm gonna ditch the Pearl snares and order up some Puresound vintage zoomatic snares for it, make it sound like its supposed to, you know?

So am I correct in thinking this early version is not that common?

I'm thinking the COB Festival, COB Radio King, and COB Sound King were all the same shell in '63..... just different strainers and butts.

In '64, the RK and SK had lines in the shell, but not the Festival.

I had a hunch on the rarity and price....but I was mainly looking for a nice sounding COB snare to go with the bebop resto project. Sometimes it works out! :p

So, techinically I believe the kit I've "created" would be considered a "Modern Jazz" outfit with the 18" bass option, or could possibly be considered a "Jet" outfit, pre-1965 spec.
