Ludwig 14"x26" Mid-70's Bass Drum Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Hi Everyone -

Up for sale: Ludwig Mid 1970's 14"x26" 6ply Black Cortex BD. Virgin shell, thin arc spurs, sharp corner B/O - Everything is in excellent shape. The only "modification" I did was add inlays to the hoops, as they were bare when I got the drum. Tried to keep it as "Ludwig factory" as possible - Each hoop has a two-piece inlay with the seams double-stapled. Check it out!

Any questions let me know - Trades welcome.

Didn't they take the re-rings out late 70's?

Odd it has pointed badge/thin spurs..................

As far as I know, Ludwig was doing the 6ply thing in 1976, but I'm not 100% sure. This drum definitely would've been right at the change with the pointy B/O and thin arc spurs... Come over to AA and take it Blair! x-mas3

Ludwig change to 6 ply shell's in late 1979..Your drum could be one of the one's Ludwig used left over part's on..It's still a go sounding bass drum...Mikey

Not that Ludwig is always 100% accurate at what they say, but they are also saying '76 for the 6ply drums. There must be a catalogue floating around somewhere because I've definitely heard the '76 year with 6ply quite a few times.

(Edit: I just realized this is an excerpt from Cook's Ludwig book.)

I don't think there was an exact cutoff. I have a Blue Oyster kit with 1976 serial numbers and it's 3 ply with clear coat interior finish- not Granitone. I tend to think that they had a bunch of 3 ply shells in backstock and a bunch of backstock wrap in unpopular colors at the time (like Blue Oyster). Put 'em together and get 'em out the door. Maybe they were even sold as discounted kits for a period of time to make room for new 6-ply kits? But my kit definitely has top-of-line hardware and all the drums have both batter and reso side mufflers factory installed.

I think they used leftover 3-ply shells for the budget "Combo" kits later on in the late 70s/early 80s, correct?

That's what I've heard, and that Cook article page also confirms it... Funny though, one of my first Ludwig kits was a butcher block Combo kit and had 6ply shells, no rings with the granitone interiors. There definitely isn't a set cut-off date for sure.

This seems to confirm that nothing went to waste, even down to the last drop of Granitone paint!

They were also probably trying to unload what they had left of the butcher block cortex wrap. I think that became quite an unpopular finish, too.

Anyway, what is the serial number on the 26" badge? I believe that the pointy badges were still used into the end of the decade if I'm not wrong.

Hey everybody...I thought the pointy B/O badge was stopped in 78 due to complaints of the points being sharp. Tearing shirts, cutting a finger or two. Seems like I read that somewhere, sometime...you know......Joe

Yes you are right Pjn1375.In the Ludwig 1980 catalog Ludwig used up all the 3ply shell's on two Combo set's they were 14x22,9x13,16x16 the snare was a arco the other set was a 5 pc 14x22,8x12.9x13,16x16 same snare..You could have traded out the 9x13 for a 10x14 tom...That's all the size's they made they also made the set's out of the Vistalite's shell's.{{Also these set's were single headed tom's even the floor tom,the bass drum was double headed but had "spacer's'' on the front head so no head was used}}.I know i have one in Red Vistalite a 5pc set...Also a side note they lug's on the first one's were made of plastic and did not look like a Ludwig lug. With so many problem's with these lug's the traded them out for the big classic lug's at the end of the set's made..My Red vistalite set has the big classic lug's..Mikey
