Vintage Student Deluxe Model Snare Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I've got a few questions regarding a 1968 Slingerland Student Deluxe Model snare drum I'm hoping you "Slingy experts" can help me with:

1. Was this particular model ever offered with 8 lugs in lieu of 6?;

2. Would the factory-issued rims on this model from this particular year require rim clips?; and

3. Would an extra hole be required or would the factory-drilled holes for the Slingerland Rapid strainer need to be modified in any way for the shell to accept a Ludwig P-85?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!Clapping Happy2

I think believe the Deluxe was always 6-lugs.

Factory issue rims would be stick-savers.

A P-85 will fit... you have to bend it a little (1/8th inch) either shorter or longer, I can't remember which..... but it's just a slight amount either way.

I may have a Rapid strainer for you if you wind up needing it... it needs some attention with a ball peen hammer to spread a rivet to repair it.....

I'll just send it to you if you want it.... no charge.........PM, email, or call me.

Thanks, Kevin!

I've never seen an 8-lug Student Deluxe Model either. This drum that I was looking at just has too many issues for me to consider it further -- one rim's got rim clips / one doesn't; a hole was drilled partially into a reinforcement ring to install the P85, etc..

I honestly am looking for a Rapid strainer for one of my other Slingy snares. However, maybe it's just me but every time I find one it's got some sort of "sticking" or "jamming" problems. I can see why so many drummers replace that strainer with the Ludwig P85. Once I find one that actually works "smoothly" I'll definitely pick it up. I do appreciate your offer though!Bowing

It came with rim clips.

70s Slingy WMP
70s Ludwig Standard Aqua Mist
60s Ludwig Champagne Sparkle Downbeat
and a whole bunch of snares and hardware

That's a different model.... 8 lugs, and it was identified, I believe as a Student Model Radio King, not the Deluxe Student Model.

Slingerland had 4 "Student" snares at the times, kinda confusing, but they are all listed in the catalogs in the Drum Guide. :)
