Stumbled across another project (Ludwig) Last viewed: 1 hour ago

The damage is mainly op the "top" of the edge, the sharp part. I think the height would decrease something like 2 mm on each side maximum, if the edge is only repaired/cleaned (keeping the 47 degrees).

I can imagine more would come off if I were to have the edges reworked into 30 degrees (won't try that myself).

And I'm starting to think I misunderstand what lacquer finish means :P. This snare here has the Mahogany finish, yes? Is the outer ply Mahogany with some clear coating, or did they put veneer over the outer ply? I don't want to (try to) take of the outer ply thinking it's veneer :P...

What a cool find! If people just wouldn't take the heads off of drums and let them sit around on the bearing edges..... Do you have any 14" snare rims sittin around? Your progress will be interesting to watch. Keep us posted.

There is a thin outer mahogany veneer on the outside of your shell. If you remove the lacquer finish, be careful not to sand through the mahogany. Just sand the finish off & refinish. Or.....just clean up the shell with warm soap & water, reassemble. & play.....marko

Strangely, I only have an 8 lug premier 2000 snare. Which of course has die cast hoops. I'll poke around a little.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I already started thinking I'd best just sand only as deep as is really necessary. Also because I do like the Mahogany look, so I'd like to keep it.

I find it curious how they didn't sand/lathe the end of the inside and outside ply. There's a jump now at the edge of those plies. I never expected this from Ludwig.

I'm sanding it, by hand (the machine does stuff a little too fast to my liking).

And I'm digging what's underneath. I'll probably use a very clear finish on this.

If you guys think I'm sanding too deep, it's already too late :P. But seriously, I like this look better than the old darker one. And the drum won't be 100% original/untouched anyway. I think it could turn out really nice looking in the end, unless I mess up...

Ad if you think it looks like a wood floor, you're probably right... But I like it anyway, so far.

I'll bet that thing will sound sweet when you get it finished... I like the look you have going on a well. Keep the pix coming.

I think I'll try to make a pic/some pics when I get new edges. I just got some good news from an experienced guy who is willing do it.

I don't know exactly when I'll go have them redone, though. Hopefully soon.

But for now, I have another question:

- What are my chances of finding anyone here who has a spare B/O pointy badge like mine (and willing to sell), as close as possible to 901XXX?

I don't mean to use it to try n make the snare more valuable. I would just like to have a nice badge on it, that's all. And of course I'd like it be as correct as possible.
