Gretsch Round Badge Question Last viewed: 7 hours ago

From section2

If you're looking for a cheap way to rewrap these, you might go with a satin flame finish from Canal Plastics Center. (They call it "moire" rather than satin flame.) They come in rolls 24" wide and as long as you want them. Last time I checked, they were $15/yard, so you should be able to get this kit done for under $75. Not bad for a beautiful Gretsch-catalog finish. As a bonus, the material is very easy to work with, though it does scratch easily (as all satin flames do). If you're interested, check the Canal Plastics web site and see if they'll mail you some samples. Just be sure to get the opaque backed material, not the clear stuff.

Do you know what mil thickness the stuff is?

I think it's 0.015", but I could be wrong. I haven't used it, so be sure to get a sample before ordering in order to confirm that it's good stuff.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Looks like Dave Weckl's signature on those cymbals. Cool!

Thanks for taking the time and for your responses to this post. I have some questions about these drums but there seems not to be much interest in them.Maybe because they don,t look very good now? Or its that they are going to be a rewraped players kit I don,t know? I am going to try and save as much of this orphaned kit as I can,I am retired and have the time to do it, although at a slower pace. I wanted to show them as they are now, in the terrible condition they are. I will have a lot of questions as I go.

Question,is there a name for the snare #4103, other than just junk?

Question, after I take the wrap off thats on now, is there anyway to determine what the original warp was?

Question,is there any companies that reproduce Badges for drums?

Question, are there any new,new old stock die cast rings for these?

Question, are there any new,new old stock tension claws for the bass?

Question, does any company still make the correct muffles for these?

Section2 thanks for the lead on wraps, I will check yours and other companies that make wraps.

Rocketman, I thought the same thing about the signatures under the cymbal bells, but I can only say that whoevers names are there their first names are Dave and Vinny? The last names are readibly but I don,t know what the two drummers last name looks like. I tried hard to capture the names with the photos but my camera is an old one. There are three of Dave and two of Vinny? On the CYMBAL THREAD I was told that some Cymbal companies had the maker sign them, that makes sense but?

They will make a fine sounding kit. I see the potential and it should be a fun project. With cleanup and a rewrap/refinish, they should look good too. They will not have the value of an all original kit, but that changed long ago. The issue is that it can get very expensive very quickly. Unless you can find parts inexpensively, you can end up spending a lot. I would take it slow, remove the vinyl and then determine what you have before taking the next step. It sounds like that is the approach you are planning to take.

Question,is there a name for the snare #4103, other than just junk?

Definitely not junk, just needs some TLC. It is the Renown model. See the 1966 catalog for more info: http://www.gretschdrums.com/ebooks/1966/index.html#/12/

Question, after I take the wrap off thats on now, is there anyway to determine what the original warp was?

If the original wrap is gone, no. There may be something under the vinyl.

Question,is there any companies that reproduce Badges for drums?

Original badges are available via eBay, but are pricey. Some sell reproduction badges, but they are not authorized and sometimes not that good.

Question, are there any new,new old stock die cast rings for these?

You can get used or new hoops. Again, they are pricey.

Question, are there any new,new old stock tension claws for the bass?

$6.95 each at Explorers. http://www.explorersdrums.com/Categories/210/Gretsch.aspx

Question, does any company still make the correct muffles for these?

$25.95 each - See Explorers link above

KCDrumDad I sure do appreciate the encourgement and some answers to my questions. I plan to take a LOT of time making a whole kit from these drums. I might also put some money into them with the realization that I won,t get any return value.

The return value will be when I give them to one of my grandchildren and he/she knows that I put the labor & time in them. Thats my return! I would hope most on this forum understands that.

I will have more questions at a later time, and thanks again. TOM

I understand the return that you will get. Sounds like a worthy effort.

To keep cost down, I would suggest that you keep an eye out for eBay auctions for the parts you need. Consider buying donor drums if necessary. [I purchased two damaged 8x12 toms just to get the hoops and a badge] Search listings each week for the parts you need. Get an idea of what these parts are worth from old auctions or from the cost of new parts. The good thing is that Gretsch parts stayed the same for years, so new and used parts are available.

One caution would be to be careful buying used mufflers, as the ones with the brass barrels tend to get stripped out. Always ask if they work correctly. Many people do without the mufflers altogether. I would move the mufflers you have to the batter side and see if you like the sound before buying any additional ones.
