Hey everyone

Just joined the community here, and so far have found out some great info trolling through some threads.

I am a recording/mix engineer up here in Vancouver, Canada and I am the proud owner of Gretsch 12/14/20 Silver Sparkle round badge that was passed down to me from my grandfather. I'm not a drummer per se, but the session drummers that come through my studio certainly love the kit.

Anyways, I look forward to learning more about my drums & cymbals and how to care for them.

Welcome! Lovely kit. I love the glass finishes. Needless to say, Gretsch RB kits are very special. Love them, we do.

Thanks bill!

The speaker in front of it is a cone from a Yamaha NS10 studio monitor, acting in reverse as a microphone. Because of its size, it picks up the extreme low frequencies from the bass drum, which is generally mixed in with a more traditional mic's signal for added sub "umph".

Nice kit and the speaker is interesting. My brother is a sound engineer. Im gonna ask him about the speaker set up there. I put new evans g2 heads on my kit at our jamhole and a emad 2 kick head. He says my new kick head is the best he's ever heard for recording. Welcome to the Forum!

I learned somethin' new, today (try to do that as much as possible). What a cool concept - I remember fooling around with electronics back in the mid 70's and stumbling on making a speaker work backwards. Never thought of it being used as a mic for a kick. I suppose it works well killing the highs and passing the sweet & lows. Nice.

The Yamaha Subkick is the commercial version of the speaker-as-a-mic trick for bass drums.
