Played my first gig with the "new" Acrolite last night...

Eye Ball

Whoa... This thing projects like no other. This is the same drum that my brother gave me, a former band-student rental. I'd cleaned it up and installed a cast top hoop, Trick strainer and Puresound snares.

Even the guys in the band were like Cool1

:p

It's such a tremendous improvement over my last snare.

A couple of days ago I emailed a Craigslist seller about an Acro that included the lugs only--for $15. That's great, because I have the strainer and butt from my Acro, as well as a set of hoops and new heads, so I could have it up and running for basically free, then sell it.

But he's not emailing me back... Lame

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

I just got my first Acro earlier this year, and can't believe what a good drum it is. Best snare I've ever played, hands down.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

I bought my niece's kid ... my great nephew? He's really only mediocre, so why don't we just call him "the kid". Anyway, I bought the kid a sweet 70s acrolite for his entrance into beginning band this year. He showed up and the director wanted to show the students what a "real snare" sounds like. He was going to demonstrate his personal snare and stopped in mid sentence. The guy walked over to the kid and smiled. He played the kid's acrolite and used it as his example. Pretty cool.

Well, I built this thing for volume. I play rimshots almost exclusively in this band, so I needed something that would be great for that.

Knowing what I know now, it makes me even more curious about how I could've made my Supra sound if I still had it.

Back when I was in the middle school band, every kid had a silver Acrolite. It was really weird when a kid would walk in with anything else.

I think the music store employees snagged 'em all and they were replaced with the much cheaper CB700's and the like.

My brother is starting to hoard the good ones in the store. He knows their worth, and is tired of seeing them get ruined by kids. He's slowly rotating them out of service and replacing them with newer, cheaper "student" drums.

:p

Hmm....I bet if the kids had those good sounding drums, they'd be more into learning to play though....that was Ludwig's theory anyway....

I know what you mean by "the look"......my first snare was a MIJ blue sparkle Stewart (I think...maybe it was a champion or an ideal...it had a fake oval slingy type badge on it anyway) and when I brought that thing into "band" oh the looks I got. Everyone else's parents just bought the Acrolite kits through the school, so I was the oddball. My dad was a drummer and he was so proud of me the day I wanted to take lessons, so he got me a snare from a buddy of his, this lowly MIJ blue sparkle snare. Man did it sound horrible. It was a 6-lugger and had that horrible zoom-matic knock-off strainer on it that never worked. It sounded better when we replaced the cheapie original heads on it with real heads from remo, but still it was no prize. I think I remember it having reinforcement rings inside it, so maybe it was made by what would become Tama?

Anyway, point is, I never had the acrolite when I was taking lessons. If I had, I'm sure I'd still have it to this day. BTW...at the time, I quit taking snare drum lessons in school by 6th grade.....I wanted to learn the kit, and they weren't teaching that. So the old man taught me a few things and I did take private lessons....the rest is history as they say....flower

Well, in my day, and still today, it's extremely rare for a middle school aged student to own anything. 99.99% of all instruments were rentals.

The Acrolites from my day were all rentals, hence they've been used and abused for years. I'm just glad my brother is retiring them as to preserve them. :)

If I'm remembering correctly, in my day it could go either way....they could rent them, or buy them outright, and I think there was a rent-to-own program as well.....

When I was in 5th grade "beginner band", we all got Acrolites as well. Ours were ones bought from the local band instrument store brand new. I have no idea what it cost my parents, but it was the standard one with the hard shell case which also fit the stand and drumsticks and rubber practice pad. That would have been around 1982, and the one I got was a pointed B/O badge one. Still have it, and it still has the original sticker from the music store on it like all the band drums did then. It's the only Acrolite of its type I've ever had. Just a year ago I got a modern version with a deeper depth. Here they are together. :)
