1966 Slingerland Restoration

Hello All,

Please enjoy! I had fun playing these last night (I take them out on special occasions). These are gold Niles Badge, stamped 1966 inside the floor tom. Brackets, legs, tom mount, spurs etc. are all original. I was lucky that everything was there, they just needed some TLC when I got them. The snare is also a gold Niles badge (acquired separately at a later date). Everything is original, except it was missing the strainer and butt plate when I got it. I installed a Ludwig P-85 (one small extra hole) and Ludwig P-32 Butt (holes matched). I covered the extra holes from the original strainer with small screws, washers and stop nuts.

Sizes:

8" x 12"

9" x 13"

16" x 16"

14" x 20"

6.5" x 14" COB snare.

The double tom mount is one of the worst ever invented! The toms would sag down to the outside (angled down towards the floor and towards both crash cymbal stands-with the highest point being where they were mounted). I solved this by replacing the angle adjustment screw (1/4" thread) with a long hex head screw, with two stop nuts to keep it tight. I figured out how much screw I needed on each side to keep the toms straight, cut the head of the screw off with a hacksaw and I put a rubber cap on the end of the screw where it meets the tom (to protect the finish and to eliminate rattle). Still not the greatest, but is much better than it was (see last photo). Comments are welcomed. Thanks!

I was the original owner of a Slingerland set from that same era. The double tom mount came with a rubber-covered piece of heavy pipe on the riser tube that prevented the toms from toeing in at their bottom edges. A used set that I bought several years later was missing that tube. I cut off a piece of heavy garden hose that I placed on the riser tube to do the same task. That Slingy set was factory wrapped in Green Glass Glitter. The piece of garden hose was a close match of green color.

Thanks, gents!

This kit did come that piece of rubber for the tom mount, but:

A. It was old, dried out and cracking and crumbling

B. There wasn't a way to keep it from sliding down the tube; it always ended up at the bottom. I could've used a hose clamp or shaft collar to support it, but it (the rubber piece) barely provided any support in its current state (the toms still sagged towards the outside), so I thought it was pretty much pointless.

I agree. Your fix is very creative, and looks good.

Great looking kit.

I couldn't agree with you more regarding the tom mount. You would think that they would have tested it in their R&D department (assuming they had one), prior to mass producing such an ineffective component.

It's easy to convert that tom mount, without drilling, to the much better setomatic or even better supersetomatic.
