Default Ludwig Black Panther 18"

Just how rare are these drums?
Have been looking for a 1970s 3-ply Black Panther 18" floor for ages, with little luck... Are they that rare?
Does anybody have an idea how much money they demand ?

I've never seen one. I bet they are as rare as the BP snare I'm looking for to complete my Superbeat kit. 20/13/16.
There is a guy on ebay selling an entire set with one & it has you know what underneath.
So if I find one I'll let ya know & vice versa!

There was one on ebay 2 weeks ago. It's the only one I've seen.

They are rare! That 18" floor tom in question is now being included with a complete kit, which also has a Panther-wrapped Citrus Mod bass drum!

Yes I saw the one on eBay. Veeerry pricy because of the citrus underneath. But even the "normal" ones are extremely rare.

Forgive my ignorance here, but what's the deal with this black panther/citrus mod thing? I'd never heard of black panthers till I got on the forum, but I gather they're rare, so this notorious (and damn expensive) FT was originally citrus mod and some Clever Clogs re-wrapped it in black panther black. Is that right? If so, isn't that a bit silly? I thought citrus mod was quite sought after.
Has this bloke transgressed the unwritten law of drums (which makes him a Cad and a Bounder) by tricking an unsuspecting buyer into thinking he/she is actually purchasing a genuine black panther, or is he doing a favour for someone who is actually after citrus mod and could easily remove the black wrap and be happy? I'm failing to grasp what the evil here is, apart from the $1600 price tag on the original advert!
As I say, I only ask out of pure ignorance and interest, no malice a forethought...

Ludwig are the one's who wrapped the Bp wrap over the citrus mod wrap, Citrus wasn't a good seller for Ludwig back in the day, so Ludwig took the already wrapped Cm shells and wrapped over them with black panther.Due to the internet it became known of this practice ludwig did, so a lot of the black panther shells got stripped of the BP wrap for the Now pricier citrus mod wrap. Hence the rarity of 18" bp now.

Citrus Mod is not the only drum wrap found under Black Panther. White Marine Pearl and Maple are two other finishes I've heard about being found under Black Panther.
Ludwig must've wrapped panther over a lot of citrus 18" drums. The one mentioned in this thread is the third one I've heard about in the last ten years.

Oh, I see. Ludwig did it themselves... things fall into place now. But not all black panthers were rewraps, were they? There would've been original ones that were purely BP and no CM (or WMP etc) underneath?

Sorry guys, I feel like a tw@t asking these schoolboy questions, but this is quite interesting and I know very little!

They also wrapped over the White Vistalites as well due to lack of sales. So if you see a Chrome Over Vistalite kit, it was done by Ludwig. Far as I am aware there are black panther drums that were just that. But I'm sure as time went by and those sold more than the Citrus wrapped kits, made sense to re-wrap non selling drums.
