Speed King - the latest and a real beauty! Last viewed: 1 day ago

It looks like "refurbishing" Speed Kings has gotten to be sort of a cottage industry. Well, okay. I've had two sent to me that were allegedly refurbished that still needed a fair amount of work. Am I suggesting that everyone's work except mine is slapdash? Absolutely not. The thing is, I don't know what they do, but I know what I do...

The footboard hinge is most commonly the culprit of these, along with a bunch of mechanical yuck and general ... well, yuck.

The hinge is rounded out, with a nylon bushing all the way through. Theory is it will minimize wear by evenly spreading the load. I am no engineer....but some things seem to make sense. Should last a good while -- I think we'll all be dead by the time this wears out.

Frame: bead blasted, painted dark gray with a little texture, then polyurethane coated. The footboard bead blasted and cleaned, then wet sanded till the raised parts are smooth, then a coat of satin polyurethane. I REALLY like the look of this! (In fact, this was going to the "the keeper," but more stuff seems to keep showing up.. Huh.)

I used the original strap -- it's a touch longer than the new ones, and plenty strong - having said that, I could put a new one on if you want it. Nylon bushing on the link connections.

The inside of the towers are cleaned multiple times (a lot of solid gunk built up!!), then the plungers and springs are cleaned - plunger's wet sanded for extra smoothness. Bearings are cleaned three times, then silicone lubed, with some grease thrown in for good measure. The threads are ALL chased, and the wing nut has been run through a die as well.

Then there's the latest innovation: a decent knob for the bass drum hoop clamp. I have the original wing nut, and I can send that instead if you'd rather, but I'm tellin' ya, this is a LOT more user friendly, and nobody sees it but you.

I did have a glitch on the rocker arm - on the lower side on the left (from the top) the hole was enlarged, so I used a slightly larger button cap fastener, and there's some dings. There's a pic. IMHO, totally no big deal, but it's there.

So... thumbnails should go to album, or use the link to get there.

$85 - we split the shipping, your half is $6. Nice pedal!

Whoever gets this pedal will be tickled. Bill makes 'em smooth and silent and half the price of a new one! What's to think about?

Believe it or else!

Thanks for the compliment -- this is a hobby for me, so I can take my time and take a little pride in what I do....

Hey, I have a couple of pedals in the basement I haven't started on...one is a cool WFL footboard. It's a little worn, but it's cool to me.

I have a couple of Ludwigs, too.

If you want one 'custom built,' let me know. It's a fun project, with choices on finish, color, polish or not, etc....

If you want to check it out, email might be best: wafulton5@gmail.com

Hats off to bfulton for a stellar transaction. Pedal arrived today and in addition to being beautiful, it's totally silent.

I'm looking forward to gigging it this weekend.

Hey Al -- thanks for the kudos. I hope you really enjoy it on the gigs!

If anything comes up, let me know... glad to re-do whatever (I mean, within reason -- not five years from now!

Anyway - thanks, and enjoy!
