Would love some help identifying "ludwig" snare Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hey guys,

So... I have this snare drum that is killing me to try to identify. I have been all over the ludwig site (and others) with no luck. It seems to have a lot of mixed up features. Including:

-6x14 size

-ten bowtie lugs

-all chrome ludwig throw off

-Black oyster pearl finish... with a missing badge... some glue remains that hints at an old ludwig badge shape...but only hints

As for sound...this is without a doubt the best sounding snare I have every heard... in my recording studio, every drummer that came through chose to use this snare over their own. Dozens of serious drummers wouldn't shut up about how good it sounded. Sheesh!

I would love to hear your opinion... is this drum a custom job that someone made using some ludwig hardware?... or is it something that ludwig produced.

Welcome... very nice drum.

It feels like a custom job to me.. that vent, the non-Ludwig butt plate, the shell and hardware combination just don't seem right to be all Ludwig.

That said... I'm almost never right when I guess at this stuff....DOH. Hopefully you'll get an expert to give you a single version of the truth.

Are you sure it's 6 and not 6.5 x 14?The snare wires look like early 60's Ludwig,the P-85 strainer is Ludwig but that variation didn't show up till the late 80's.The bowtie classic lugs are Ludwig.

The wrap is a copy of Ludwig 60's oyster black pearl.The grommet isn't Ludwig.There's no Ludwig badge,and I doubt the shell is Ludwig if it's 6 instead of 6.5 inches.

Too many red flags.60's wrap pattern with a possible 6 ply Ludwig shell from 76 on which has no rerings.

A drum has conflicting parts that's at the very least a rewrap of a more modern shell.

Yes, way to many red flags for this to be an actual Ludwig snare drum. Not that it hasn't been well done, just doesn't look original.

The closest drum Ludwig offered in the 80's was the Rock/Concert snare drum, which came with a 6-ply shell and could be ordered with a P85/P32 combination. However, your drum has a generic butt.

As to the strainer, not how short the handle sticks up above the tension knob. This style was used in the early-to-mid 70's, but the slide part is newer.

The ears on the hoops are too wide from what Ludwig was using.

The wrap, while nice looking, doesn't appear to be of the pattern in the 60's, but possibly a reproduction.

Without closer inspection, I can't say for sure what shell you've got, but it doesn't really look like a Ludwig.

Let's see what others have to say!

Wow... quick responses. Thanks for the help.

So... I'm guessing that someone took a mixed bag of ludwig parts and a new shell and built a custom snare drum.

Well... whatever their intent was, they made a great sounding drum.

Thanks again... if anyone else has anything to add, it would be greatly appreciated.
