WMP WFL snare drum rehab Last viewed: 1 day ago

A Friend who played bass in an old band I was in gave me this shell with lugs and no hoops years ago. along with it I got a 14x14 ludwig WMP floortom and some other stuff he thought was "old junk"

Traded that floor tom for some cymbals, and just had this in the closet for years with hopes to find original nickel plated hoops..

I finally decided to just throw these slingerland Steel sticksavers from a 70's drum and some heads, a slingerland tone control (doesnt fit right).

she sounds pretty good. has a mahogany inner ply but I never actually counted how many plies there are in total.

Whats the shell construction of these? the image doesnt show the badge very well but from what I could come up with online, its a mid to late 50's badge

I would say three ply, mahogany-poplar-mahogany with maple rings.

Nice drum, six lug??

Great drum. You can find the proper nickel hoops on ebay from time to time. Good that you got it together and giving it some play time. That was a nice gift!

Looks like you have a WFL Barrett Deems.

A few years later, they ended the Barrett Deems endorsement, and changed the model name of this snare to Jazz Festival. William Ludwig also bought the company name back.

In 1963 a young drummer from Liverpool whose band was really taking off went into Arbiter's Drum City in London and ordered a Ludwig Downbeat kit. He preferred the Jazz Festival snare to the Downbeat model, so they subbed that one in.

Which is why you can hear that snare on every Beatles recording after 1963, and heaven knows how many recordings by other drummers who wanted a kit just like Ringo's.

My Barrett Deems has brass hoops, probably nickel plated.

I have yet to shine it all up. Kinda liking it in its patina'd state, also don't want to have it offline for the amount of time it would take to polish it all up. The Duco finish is trashed beyond the point of restoration, so it needs to be resprayed as well.

Oddly enough, despite this model's legendary status, Ludwig does not currently have a "Jazz Festival" snare in their line. To my thinking, that's like Fender not having a Telecaster.

Very interested to see what that Legacy Mahogany snare is like.
