Why ? Last viewed: 18 hours ago

I've been scoping the classifieds for a good sounding workhorse kit, and noticed something.. Most mid range asian/"overseas" kits are usually well priced for most drum manufacturers, but when it comes to Gretsch, not so much. The Catalina series comes to mind. Their birch, maple, shells (not to be confused with their Club/Jazz series drums--or are they the same ??) sell for quite a high price point.. I've seen the Club Rock, Club Jazz, and Club Classic, all sell at a decent price point, so why are the birch and maple series shells different ? Ludwig overseas kits usually aren't that expensive, so the question is, WHY ? Why are Gretsch overseas drums priced higher than any other drum company ?

This is just an observation..:confused::confused:

The answer is..................................because. Because they can get away with it as long as the Gretsch mojo continues to work for them.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I don't think they're over priced for what you get. The Gretsch off-shore drums are made well, sound great and look good too. These shellpacks go for around $7 or $800usd new out-of-the-box. That's pretty decent from what I've seen out there. I've checked a few out at the shops and compared to most other brands these Gretsch drums are more for your money in my opinion. I like some of the small Sonor Kits too but I prefer the Gretsch snares. The Gretsch Catalina Series drums are worth what they're selling for and more from what I've seen. They have some killer finishes too.

That may be so, in the US... In Canada, especially in my province of Quebec, the prices are ridiculous..$1100 for a Catalina Jazz kit ?Mind you, some of the ignorant sellers think that just because it's Gretsch, it should mean expensive.. Not so.. Ludwig's discontinued Epic series were made overseas, and will hold their ground with any of the Catalina series drums, and they don't sell for insane prices.. I saw a 5 piece used, but in like new condition fusion set go for $600 Cdn.. To me, that's a good deal for a kit made overseas.. While i agree that Gretsch overseas kits are made well,

I think the market value is slightly exaggerated.. Remember, out of the box at $7-800 in the US, is not so in Canada.

Here, i seen a Gretsch Renown go for $1999.00 new..Here's one from Canada's largest music retailer,

Long and McQuade-- Way overpriced..Also, to be fair, Grestch isn't the only drum company making overpriced asian made kits.. Sonor is probably leading the pack in that department, and don't even have traditional sizes like Gretsch.

I'm in Canada too (B.C.). Sorry about quoting the USD prices above - I assumed you were in the USA.

I bought a new Gretsch Renown Purewood African Mahogany kit - ordered from the factory (only 2 left in the factory when I ordered mine) - from Tom Lee on Granville in Vancouver, B.C. I paid $2450 (MSRP was $2999usd at the time. Of course our Canadian dollar was a bit stronger then but not anywhere near par.

These PWAM drums are amazing. They're built beautifully - sound awesome - and well worth the price. The Purewood series hit the market in 2005 and finished up in 2012 - each year offering a different wood.

These drums are under $1100 before tax - but I will say the shipping into Canada might be expensive. That's why retailer charge a lot for Drums and drum gear coming from the USA to Canada......the Dollar difference....the shipping - it all adds up.

There's a 5pc Catalina shellpack on eBay right now for $800usd (under $1100cdn). For some reason the Forum won't let me post the link here.

I will often have stuff shipped to a mail drop just over the boarder and drive the 3hr round trip to get it. It has been worth it in most cases because the shipping from the USA to Canada can be ridiculous and often it's Free Shipping within the USA. Can't beat free.
