Which Great Gretsch Sound?

So I've been doing a side-by-side comparison of my RB and SSB 8x12 and 14x14 toms. Both with REMO Ambassadors top and bottom and tuned alike as humanly possible. Amazing how much the RB's edges and lack of vent hole reduce stick attack and really smooth out the sound. Resonance is only slightly less than the SSB toms which was surprising. I've got to admit that in the higher "jazz tunings" the '79 SSB drums sound like what I think Gretsch should be.

Never play it the same way once.

My kit is a 58' RB made with 3-ply Jasper (Brooklyn factory) shells, no vent holes in the toms (tack badge) and they are fat and warm sounding. I love em. Great tuning range and they sound awesome tuned in the high-middle of their range. To my ears, that high-ish jazzy, warm tone-y-ness from 50's jazz recordings is what I associate with the Great Gretsch Sound.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I've had ,3 3ply kits and now 4 of the 6 ply kits, I now have a 70's kit that I am really digging. 6ply is getting my vote.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!
