I am thinking of buying another snare to get a different flavor than my 59 Slingerland wood snare, it's a one trick pony. I want to stick with early slingerland, COB would be a plus I think. Can anybody tell me what I should be looking for as far as models, identifying features, etc? Did they make any early COB snares in Chicago? The only dealbreaker would be a clamshell strainer, mine has one and I won't ever own another.
Which early Slingerland COB snare?

The Gene Krupa Sound King is a great COB snare! Easy to find in 8 or 10 lug versions and 5" or 6.5" depths. Although the Zoomatic strainer isn't loved by all, a well maintained example is a pleasure to work with. It was introduced around '63-'64 so could fit into your kit's time period.
If you are looking for something a little earlier the predecessor to the Sound King was the same COB shell with a simple 3-point strainer. The pic below is the Slinger/Leedy version from 1960-63 called the Joe Harris model.
Never play it the same way once.
