No. It was hit from the outside of shell kind of like a flying saucer. Yes, it is 2 plies of maple. These are something like 1/16" thick and glued together horribly. Is there glue all over the interior? I don't know how it happened that Gretsch and Kent both used Jasper for the shells and only Kent shells show the glue everwhere. How did this happen? I wonder if Kent made their own shells for awhile...?

Yep, 2 plies is correct, but it may actually be one piece of wood spooled around twice.

Actually there are 2 discernable places where you can see the plies' overlay. I didn't quite get out the magnifying glass but that's not really such a bad idea. :p

What's funny is that at first sight I thought this was one of those crap imports from the sixties. It wasn't until later when I really looked over the shell that I realized it was well made. By the way, what does the term 'stencil' mean anyway. I have a theory but want to hear it from the wizard.

Currently working on a 7 piece virgin double bass 3 ply early 70's Ludwig kit to be wearing....MOD ORANGE.

I have heard that some of the shells were 1 ply of clock spring construction,think rolling a piece of paper into a tube,and that some of them can look like 3 ply also because of this.
