I have a Ludwig mother of pearl set from the mid 70's. When does that become vintage?
When do old drum become vintage?
band2Storm Trooper:oVintage is in the eye of the beholder.
I am busy right now or I would give you the links to them. Them being the two or three threads on this very forum that cover this subject from soup to nuts.
If I get freed up later on I will repost with the links!

"Vintage" refers to "of a certain era". My car is of a 1997 vintage, for example. My friend's car is of a 2009 vintage. When referring to "vintage drums", people typically are referring to drums from the mid 70s and before. Some people even see 1970 as the strict cut-off. After somewhere around this point in time, they stopped making drums like they used to.
So, no, there is no constant magic number of years old a drum set has to be in order for a drum set to be considered "vintage". It kills me to see people posting about their "so old it's vintage by now" kits. I'm sorry, but I'll never consider your late 80s Tama or your early 90s Yamaha to be "vintage". That's a term designated only for a specific era.
Mid-70s Ludwig kit, huh? If it's 3-ply with re-rings, that's vintage by my book...
1965 Ludwig Hollywood
1970 Ludwig Jazzette
"Vintage" in reference to drums is a somewhat ambiguous term. For American drum sets, I don't look at anything younger than 1979. That's my cutoff point.

The definition of "vintage" is essentially stated in previous posts. Everything is of some vintage even if the vintage is Last Wednesday. The term is incorrectly used to imply collectibles from previous eras. My own take on "vintage" drums is that pre 1970 drums and go-withs qualify as candidates for me. There are a few exceptions from Slingerland, Rogers, Walberg & Auge, and Zildjian made in the early 1970's that appeal to me. But, the types of drum gear that appeal most to me were those from the mid 50's through the late 60's.
So would you consider Legend drums vintage since they are not made anymore? Do you think they will become very valuable like old Ludwigs, Slingerlands, and Gretsch?
Yamaha Cherry Wood Recording Custom 1987/2005 8/10/12/13/14/16/22
Ludwig Black Diamond Pearl 1966 5x14 S.S./13/16/22
Gretsch wood finish 1959 5x14/13/16/22
Slingerland Radio King Capri Pearl 5x14 Radio King
Gretsch Silver Sparkle Catalina Club Bop 2008 18/14/12/10/5x14

They are possibly future "vintage" or collectible drums. The Walberg & Auge drums that I own and love are great drums from a now-defunct company. A set of W&A drums typically share most of their major components with Gretsch, Rogers, and Ludwig. But, they sell for considerably less money than Gretsch or Rogers of the same age, and a bit less than Ludwigs.
When do drums become vintage.....in the year 2525....if man is still alive.....:D

This question is asked allot and, as you can see, everyone has their opinion. For the sake of accuracy and consistency, I like to use information I got many years ago from an article in Modern Drummer about this very subject. Basically, the consensus was that a drum kit, or single drum, becomes "vintage" after it is 25 years old. Yes, I hear all the arguments and conjectures now, but 25 years for an instrument does make it vintage. Now, I will agree that I don't have an interest in drums from the 80's and newer as "vintage". But, the bottom line is that, in 2011, any drum up to 1986 is considered "vintage".
