I was under the impression (mistakenly?) that Buddy Rich played White Marine Pearl kits exclusively, regardless of which particular manufacturer he was endorsing at the time.

Today I picked up the "Rich versus Roach" LP at an Estate Sale and was quite surprised to see him sitting behind a Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl kit on the cover. Was this actually a "playing" kit of Rich's or was it used strictly for the album pics? I'm also wondering if he played kits with other wraps that I'm not aware of?

Enlighten me, please!

Oldschool, that's the real deal he did play one of them, in fact that very album, a bud and myself met Buddy rich at the Charlotte Jazz Festival right after his quadruple bypass heart surgery, my Bud Kenny is a huge album dealer and had 2 of those very albums still sealed, he sent one to Buddy as a gift, after the show we spent 30 minutes on his bus chewing the fat, Man I sure miss him!!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I thought I remember reading somewhere that he did use WMP, they just had more of a bluish tint to them than regular WMP

I must chime in, being the Buddy FREAK and historian that I am! Buddy's personal sets were ALL WMP and the "tint" was dictated by the particular manufacturer's WMP wrap on hand, with each manufacturer/companies "tint" and chip pattern being a little different... however! ... Buddy would do sessions... a clinic here and there... guest shots... etc., and many times he would play what was supplied. He was indeed endorsing WFL during this album's session with Max Roach, but those are not his personal/touring set or cymbals as shown on the cover of this album. They may have been supplied STRICTLY for the photo cover art in this case. Nontheless, a fine album as I of course have a COUPLE copies!

I saw BR LIVE 5 times between 1973 and 1978... met with him in 1973 one on one... ( GREAT story there! ) ... and have a TON of BR media spanning his entire career, not to mention my BR snare drum collection covering every model snare drum he played bewteen the years of 1949 and 1979, with every drum correct to model/year/wrap as Buddy played it. I have been a fan since 1967 which is when I first "discovered" Buddy Rich. I was but 12, and have remained a fan to this day, which includes TONS of research on Buddy's life, times, and drums. Indeed!

Why I oughta...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wise guy you are aren't you BBK???!!! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah...

Long time BR FREAK, and absolutely HUGE collection featuring all types of media, even film, some of it very rare, although I like my hamburgers medium well, but I digress. Where was I... oh yeah,

It was BECAUSE of Buddy and his WMP Rogers back in 1967 that started me down the Rogers path, truth be told. My father surprised me with Buddy Rich's "Swingin' New Big Band" album back in '67, and I would listen to it constantly whilst staring... ( drooling is probably more accurate ) ... at the cover showing BR playing those gorgeous WMP Rogers in full color. Finally got my Rogers BR sets too!, but my dad deemed them too expensive back then, so my first set was a Ludwig "Downbeat" in Champagne Sparkle. Those were nice drums for sure, especially for a 12 year old budding drummer... but I still continued to stare/drool at the cover of that album while listening to BR tear it up at The Chez!

TommyP -- Always great to hear from you. Thanks so much for the information that you provided. I had a funny feeling that you might be kind enough to share some of your BR knowledge with the rest of us.

THANKS AGAIN for your time as well as your input!
