What's My Rogers? Last viewed: 17 hours ago

Hi all,

I inherited an old Rogers Big R kit about ten years ago which I've since restored. I'd like to know if it's the old 5-ply shell or the XP-8 shell.

The serial number is D-74xxxx. The wrap is Sunburst Tobacco. It's in really nice condition and came with an older snare - also in great condition. The snare is a Dyno-sonic with 7 lines. I believe the snare is mid 60's era.

Regards,

James

Hello jkconnolly...and Welcome to the forum! The one picture of the tom, showing the reinforcing hoop, is the key here. The XP-8 shells had no re-rings. So, you have the 5-ply shells with 5-ply rings. All-in-all, nice drums! Some of our other members, with even more Rogers knowledge, should join in soon.

Thanks Mark - and thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes, I'm trying to work out if it's a Londoner 5 kit or not. I think it may be dated around 1978 but the fact that it's in the Tobacco Sunburst finish is throwing me a little. I thought that only came into use in 1980. I await further comment :)

Welcome!

Mark is correct - 5plys. The drums aren't wrapped, they have a lacquer finish. Those drums didn't get the speckled grey interior of the wrapped shells.

If they all look like the one shown, they are in great condition.

That's a rare finish on the XP-8's (because it was labor intensive) and I think even more rare on the 5plys.

The Londoner kit during this time period consisted of: 14x22, 8x12, 9x13, 16x6 and a 5x14 COB Dynasonic. Are these your sizes?

Yes, those are the exact sizes although as I mentioned, the snare I think is an older Dyna-sonic with the 7 lines. All the drums are in the same great condition as the one shown.

Hi James!

Not sure how you got the 7-line Dynasonic, but they're great. I've got one, too. Regardless of the snare drum, you do have a Londoner kit. Post pictures of the entire kit when you get a chance. I'm sure we'd all love to see them!

1978-79, as I answered your PM.

Beautiful. Five Ply with rings. These are fantastic.

Tobacco Sunburst came out before XP8, as did all of the lacquer finishes. but within a year of that change.

Thanks guys - it's very exciting engaging with you all regarding my drums. The kit was bought for me as a surprise by my grandad off an old drummer here in Coventry, UK, in 2006. It was in a sad state before I bought it back to life. It's in great condition now. I'll post pics of it all soon :)
