Could anyone please explain what this chunk of metal is, and why it could possibly be worth $6000?

It's a "Hang" drum (pronounced "hung"). Handmade in Switzerland or some exotic place....loooooong waiting list to get one made and then the maker has to decide IF he wants to make you one....He has to meet you.first...something like that....not kidding. There are several knockoffs of them out there for MUCH less money...but somehow, these things get bought and sold. They are pretty cool sounding instruments in the right hands....

It's one of these,
$6,000? No way. Most are made from old Propane tanks.
For around $200 you can make one yourself.
Can't embed anymore?
wow...we posted the same video!
JINX!!!!
Love the egg crates on the walls, old school, low budget sound proofing.
Love the sound of the Hang. There are How2 videos so you can make one yourself.
Wow! That dude really wails on those things. Sounds ultra cool, love that tune - could be a movie soundtrack. Figure if this guy could afford two of those suckers, ($ 12,000.00?) he could afford some proper sound insulation foam. That tune's gonna be stuck in my head now... at least until some stupid commercial jingle takes it's place.
Me likey! Not $6000.00 likey, but me likey nonetheless.
There's another one on sale at fleabay for $4,900.00! A 'bargain!' lol
Wouldn't mind having one to mess around on though... looks like fun to play.

Those have a really nice sound. Very relaxing melody to listen too. That guy is good. I have never heard or seen those before. A bit expensive but really interesting none the less. Cool vid thanks. I think if I tried to make one out of a old propane tank it would sound like a old propane tank. I'll have to look for the how 2 vids.
Players/builders have their own forum too!

Thanks for that link. Went through the various forums there and feel a bit more enlightened about this unique instrument, although I don't think I'm ready to trade a wood Dynasonic for one. With current prices for these hand-made instruments at $1000 - $3000, I'm surprised Sabian, LP, or Gibraltar hasn't figured out how to machine one for $500.
