Hey forum, just wondering if anybody can help me identify this snare. I brought it for £30 at a local shop and all they told me was they brought it second hand off the Ipswich marching band. There are some extra holes drilled for mounting as a marching snare and the shell inside is seamless, a magnet does not stick to it, or the hoops or lugs, just the tension rods. The paint is actually a white enamel, and was quite hard to damage. And finally the bearing edges seem to have been welded on and the snare bed is only slightly raised just for the snare wires to get through.

Thanks guys :D

ps someone at my local store said it looked like a really early 1920s ludwig pioneer?

I know its only 6 lugs and is likely some intro snare, but it sounds superb, better than my others. Part of me wants to keep it but another part wants to sell. I am not sure how much it would fetch though, especially over here in the UK seeing as it has no badge.

Looks like a Ludwig snare strainer. In fact, it looks like the strainer I would need to replace the original broken one on my early 60's Ludwig 13" piccolo. I believe that is the P81 strainer.

I can confirm it is 14x5. Here are some more pics of her, still tempted to sell...

I also have a calfskin head that came with it laying around.

be careful when tightening those tension rods. the hoop clips are made of brass and can break right in half without much effort. the original replacements can be hard to find sometimes.

Looking at catalogs, looks like a 30's Pioneer or Universal but they're steel drums nickeled.

Looks like the Pioneer 1918-1940 and also the Universal 1932-1950. So could be anything from 1918-1950? I think moreso probably a Universal? Is there a badge or badge hole?

I am not sure this is steel, the magnet attracted itself to the tension rods only, not the shell...

And thanks mike, dont worry I have been careful. It was cranked so tight when i got it i needed the drill to undo it. :/

No badge but there is a badge hole. Strangely it seems to be on the lower half of the shell beneath the bead. Maybe the snare was flipped over at some point i dont know. If it was flipped over it would look exactly like this:

Maybe the heavy nickeling causes the magnet not to stick? Anyway, very nice drum and score! Congrats.

Tried the magnet on interior just to be safe. Nothing at all. Plus where there is a scratch it is a bit green. Local store said it was seamless brass, but I am not sure how much faith to put into them, but I definitely see no seam. Shame it is not worth much more than the £30 I put into it.
