what do I use if no bass drum is handy??

I helped out with these rock-a-billy guys saturday with my Supra and cowbell.I had it with me to sell at the Flea market. For a bass drum I found a empty cardboard box and beat the sh*t out of it.What is a good replacement for a bass drum?? It has to be small enough to fit in the car with my wifes stuff she sells.I have seen guys with a suitcase and a pedal hooked to it.I am open for any and all ideas for the next time. I got a paying gig out of this little operation, plus they play oldies country and classics, right down my alley..

Thanks,Vati

ii used an old cooler..

std it up tall / open the lid (this helps to balance and allows it to be heard)..

put yr kick pedal on something that keeps it from slipping..

I used an open, floor tom Fibre case once. It produced that nice flat thump we all liked in the 70's when we stuffed our bass drums with pillows and blankets.

I am working with a guy that is using a suitcase currently. He has a galvanized flange on the top to which he clamps a closed 12" hi-hat pair and he has a wooden frame the allows for attachment of the pedal and to hold the suitcase in place. He sits on a cajon for some additional sonic opportunities. Pretty cool set-up.

I use a 14x24 (24" tall) Cocktail drum off my hats for a second bd....I'm not much of a double-bass drum player with my feet but I improvise with my left hand. It works for me.

Just a thought..........

I've been in a similar situation and just stomped on the hollow stage floor. The mic's picked up the thump and it was pretty cool.

I have also been working on my second suitcase drum set. Instead of a suitcase this time I have an old Slingerland snare drum case. The kind that the beginner snare came with, it includes space for a snare, a music stand, and a snare stand and some sticks.

I'll post pics when I get the chance.

I've also used a djembe on it's side, in a little cradle
