What did my early 70's Ludwig kit start out as? Last viewed: 32 seconds ago

The drummer from Alice Cooper was Neil Smith. I can't tell from that video but he was known for playing a Huge Premier kit. It had small mirrors all over the shells to give the disco ball effect. I think I'm a little younger than you O lugs but I used to draw pictures of Neil's as well as Carl Palmers kit. When I was in like 4th grade. I was mesmerized. And then I saw The Octa Plus like you said by then it was hopeless Drum junky ever since.

I loved the old Rocky and Bullwinkle Show....Green acres....Gilligan.....Andy Griffith....As far as being long-winded. yes, I confess. I try to avoid making long posts, in general, but sometimes I bite my tongue so much I end up needing to set the record straight every now and then. *going back into tongue-biting mode*

But do you bite your tongue so hard that you need stitches? I know I do sometimes...

Most of the time, I have diarrhoea of the mouth...

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

We could be talking Neil Smith, Carl Palmer, Alex Van Halen, Phil Collins- they all had these huge, beautiful kits that none of us could afford when we were young enough to lift them; now that we're old enough to afford them, we're too old to lift them!!!

Here's another famous huge drum set from 1967!! Waaaay before catalogs depicted anything like it.It's clear that, at least in some cases, the catalogs followed what the drummers were using onstage. And, of course, smart marketers knew that kids wanted to be like their onstage heroes -thus, when the new catalogs came out, there was always a monster kit included in the lineup. That trend still holds true to this day to some extent. Companies still like to show a "flagship" model in their ads.

Why wouldn't you show a configuration (if not the same exact kit) of one of your endorsers, even if you didn't put a name to it?

"beautiful kits that none of us could afford when we were young enough to lift them; now that we're old enough to afford them, we're too old to lift them"!!!

Hence, the return to "normal" four piece and five piece drum sets. The biggest drum set I owned was an early 60's Oaklawn Camco Aristocrat set with 14x22"-Two 9x13"-14x14"-16x16"-matching wood snare. Those six drums were too many and too large for me. I had my fling with them, then went back to playing two up/one down for over 20 years. If I went back to playing again, I'd most likely play a four piece set in smaller dimension drums. The biggest vintage set in my collection is also the youngest drum set that I own. The drums are 1972 Walberg & Auge. I had no idea that W&A made drums that late in history when i found these. They are covered in a glass glitter that I have never seen anywhere else. I call it Ice Blue Metallic which is a Fender color from the 1950's and 1960's. Here is a picture of my W&A set (22-13-13-16-matching snare).

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
