WFL Pioneer Maple shell? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Has anyone seen a WFL maple shell Pioneer? I bought this having never seen one with anything other than mahogany. The date stamp is in red ink and the shell is unfinished inside. Any thoughts?

I believe that if the finish on the shell was a stain/lacquer,or a painted finish,Ludwig as well as others used maple as the outer ply in a 3 ply shell.Maple was a better choice for staining, and held paint better than the more porous mahogany.

Thanks Steve, I have heard and seen the outer ply being maple but I was wondering if any one had seen this model with a maple inner ply. It isnt something I had come across before and found it odd. Thanks again

As with all things Ludwig, it varies. I've got a 1959 10x14 parade snare which is lacquer finish and mahogany on the outside and on the inside. And my 1959 jazz combo snare is maple on the outside (it was duco in a previous life) and mahogany on the inside. So I suspect if you look hard enough you can find all the possible combinations of outer and inner ply and finish in a single year. At least you would have fun trying.

I've seen a few. I had a WFL "Pioneer" in duco finish last year until I realized I couldn't get any sound out of it that I wanted, so it had to mosey along...

My pair of WFL Pioneer snares. I don't know if these are maple, but they sure look like what you have.
