Did WFL ever make a matcher-piccolo in mahogany? Thinking I might like to add a little sister...

Thanks

Jim

I am hardly an authority but I dont think think the Porta Pac or the 3x13 came in that finish. I assume they were either wrapped or duco. More or less bumping this one back to the top.

Yes that eBay one looks like a 4x14 downbeat to me.

I'm pretty sure that you could find a WFL 3x13 in mahogany. I've got a 3x13 with a WFL butt which came to me refinished and no badge. It was once duco, and duco isn't listed in the 1957 catalog either. The 1957 catalog just mentions pearls. But by the 1962 catalog it mentions "lacquer finishes". As usual there are always drums which don't appear in the catalog. There are always exceptions...

So mine was nicely refinished back to the maple with the hardware done in brass before I picked it up. A player's drum, but a pretty drum to my eye. And it sounds great. I put a transition badge on it:

I was considering buying that damaged one. I contacted the seller and asked if the shell damage was all the way through the shell and he told me that it was almost all the way through. I didn't go for it because of that....too much damage for me. This one just sold yesterday....transition badge downbeat.

Thanks for that Drumbum675. The eBay snare you linked to:

At $300 that feels like a pretty good deal to me. The only thing which looks a little odd is the grommet on the badge. It seems more whitish than I'd expect, but that could be a trick of the light. Any of those who practice forensic detection of rebadging care to comment?

BTW, that's not a Downbeat (4x14 8 sideways lugs) it's a Jazz Combo (3x13 6 sideways lugs) like the one I posted in the photo above, except the recent eBay one is mahogany as requested by the original poster. So you've nailed the request to find out if a mahogany finish one exists.

I guess part of the problem is that many people call any snare smaller than 5" depth a piccolo, so that would cover a few Ludwig models from back then. But Ludwig didn't use the term piccolo at that time as far as I know. Others may know better.

Now that I look at it, I think you are right....looks like the badge was removed and reattached with a new grommet.....

From auto.pilot

Did WFL ever make a matcher-piccolo in mahogany?

I know this is a very old thread. However, I believe WFL did make the drum you are looking for. The predecessor to the Ludwig Downbeat is a 4x14 mahogany piccolo called the WFL Impacto.

I own one and I'm told mine is a transition year. It has the Downbeat snare strainer and a gold keystone WFL tag. My understanding is most Impactos had a different strainer.

Regardless, the WFL mahogany piccolos are out there. They just appear to be rarer than the Downbeats.

Hope it helps.
